How To Screen Print with Martin Atkins:
Broaden Your Merch Range For Less, Increase Bottom Line
Fri Apr 17, 2020 – 9am PST / 11am CST
FREE NARIP Webinar: Tune In From Anywhere
Graphic above: a few of Atkins’ designs.
Join us at this NARIP program to hear and see how Martin Atkins takes artwork designed for promotion and sales, screen-prints it, saves money, and creates value. Learn how you can, too.
We tuned in to Martin Atkins’ recent program on this topic and learned so much useful, practical info that we asked for permission to rebroadcast it for NARIP Members. Martin generously offered to do another program on the same topic for NARIP, and take questions live. NARIP is a long-time fan and follower of the aggressively humorous, smart, take-no-prisoners and let-nothing-hold-you-back D.I.Y. approach Atkins takes (and we are proud owners of his highly recommended Tour:Smart, a book on touring every professional should buy and read immediately, if not sooner – it’s on NARIP’s Recommended Reading List).
Anecdote: during the program we attended online, Atkins told the story of an artist at SXSW seeking $10,000 in sponsor funding to create merch, whereupon one of his friends said all she needed was $2. Then with nothing more than a Q-tip, bleach, a spray bottle and a few old T-shirts, she created merch that has become collectible and highly valued by her fans. Atkins showed us how.
YOU WILL LEARN
- Versatility of screen printing: not as hard as you think
- Powerful tools
- Simple equipment & supplies, including inexpensive substitutes
- Visual samples, including T-shirts, posters, postcards, suits, coffee bags and other items
- Broaden your range of merch to raise your bottom line
- Imperfection is your friend – turn “errors” into one-of-a-kind collector’s items
- The power of speed: knowledge of screen printing enables you to create and update fast to meet demand, such as adding tour dates to a poster
“I feel blessed to have the skill of screen printing right now,” says Atkins. “It’s enabled me to come up with new bags for Dark Matter to put coffee in and other retailers to use in different ways for very little cost. A little bit of time and a little bit of skill, we were able to create a way for other people to make their own momentum! Screen printing is such a valuable tool to put into your tool belt, connect to your audience, define your brand and, yes, make some money too!”
It’s OK to tell bands to ‘sell more merch’ to fill the dollar gap from lost shows, but how do they make more of it without going further into debt? Screen printing helps!
NARIP will be host this a virtual screen printing workshop with Atkins from his Invisible Records label offices in Chicago so you can learn how to create your own merch, scenery, posters and more. He will show you basic techniques and share ideas to broaden your range of merch and raise your bottom line.
Get an insider’s peek at the economic and artistic realities of the fastest-changing, hottest business in the world and don’t miss this intimate and interactive learning experience.

Andy Gould, Artist Manager, Film Producer
Manager/film producer Andy Gould began his career at age 15 as the messenger boy for Chappell Music. During a routine delivery to George Martin’s prestigious studio AIR London, Gould inquired about work. With that, Gould became one of AIR studios legendary “tea boys,” serving tea for some of the most prolific producers and artists of the time. He was quickly promoted and eventually segued into the world of music publishing. He moved on to Radio Luxemburg, and then Screen Gems where he worked with Carole King, David Gates (Bread) and many other classic songwriters. Gould was sought out by CBS Publishing, and eventually joined the company in New York. During his tenure at CBS, Gould worked with Billy Joel, ELO, Kansas, and had hit records with Pat Benatar, Rainbow, and The Pointer Sisters. In 1983 he left CBS to join Worldwide Entertainment, co-managing Kool & the Gang, Regina Belle, and The Manhattans. In 1989 Gould, along with partners Walter O’Brien and Bob Chiappardi, formed Concrete Management & Marketing, the top rock management company at the time. At Concrete they built a solid reputation as the management force behind the some of the century’s most iconic hard rock, and defining the heavy metal landscape with bands like White Zombie, Pantera, Metal Church and Anthrax. In 1993, Andy Gould Management was formed in Los Angeles where he continued his successful relationship with Rob Zombie – a relationship that yielded several multi-platinum albums and 7 feature films. It was during this time that he partnered with Rob McDermott on the budding career of modern rock royalty, Linkin Park. Gould also achieved platinum success with Powerman 5000, Monster Magnet, Type O Negative and Static X. In 2001, Gould partnered with The Firm where he, and Simon Renshaw, ran the music division in the company’s prime. Gould continued to work with his own rosters, as well as working with The Firm’s impressive list of musical talents including Korn, Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias. In 2006, Spectacle partnered with Irving Azoff’s Front Line Management Group, where their co-management of Guns N’ Roses ushered in the band’s comeback. In 2010, Andy Gould reformed his own company, Spectacle Entertainment Group. Gould also runs a label partnership with Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) called, T-Boy Records, which will serves as an umbrella label releasing new music and albums from established hard-rock bands with major followings. To date, the label has released some of the more successful albums, in recent years, for Megadeth and Eagles of Death Metal. Gould has also firmly planted his feet in the film world as a producer. Along with a 25-year management career with Rob Zombie, he produced all of Zombie’s films including the controversial and critically acclaimed Lionsgate films House Of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects. Gould also produced Zombie’s re-imagining of the horror classic Halloween (2007) for The Weinstein Company, which broke Labor Day box office records. Gould’s seventh feature film with Zombie, horror juggernaut 31, premiered at Sundance 2016. With years of experience and success, Gould has proved his elasticity in response to an ever-evolving technology and media landscape, with his sense of humor and ingenuity firmly in tact.
Rob McDermott, Artist Manager
Rob McDermott learned early in his career how to develop bands from their first demos and clubs from his mentor Andy Gould. Rob has worked with dozens of multi-platinum artists in various capacities, but is best known for his decade working with Linkin Park, selling 50 million albums, garnering over 25 awards including 2 Grammys, and selling out arenas and stadiums worldwide. Rob has built a reputation for planning and executing successful projects from developing Multi-Million dollar festival tours, creating amazing fan communities around the world, creating Specialty Album events and building Non-Profit Organizations. Rob’s Mad Mac Entertainment currently works with YouTube creator 10 Second Songs (Anthony Vincent) whose Music 20 styles videos have almost 3 million subscribers and garnered over 180 million views, music artists Icon For Hire who have over 160M audio and video streams and upstart duos Migrant Motel and Repenter. Also a rabid technologist, Rob has held consulting and advisory roles at Sparkart, the digital agency responsible for building Linkin Park’s digital empire and Tim McGraw, Bon Jovi, and UFC Community and e-commerce systems. Sparkart is home to projects as varied as the medical vaccine fundraising platform Immunity Project and blockchain ticketing agency Tari. Rob is majority owner of To11 Media Inc. who are re-imagining the legendary US hard rock and metal music brands METAL EDGE & METAL MANIACS. Prior to Mad Mac Entertainment, Rob McDermott grew from intern to partner at Andy Gould Management/Concrete Management, Partner at The Firm, and President of Collective Music Group working with managers and artists ranging from superstars Dixie Chicks, Enrique Iglesias and Michele Branch to international rock acts Rob Zombie, Korn, Avenged Sevenfold and Slash.

Co-writing Songs: Legal & Creative Issues
How To Avoid Songwriter Disputes With Dean Serwin, Esq.
What happens when two or more people co-write a song? Failure to communicate clearly or agree on splits can result in disputes that are time-consuming, expensive and unnecessary. Worse, an encumbered copyright cannot be exploited.
Organization and rights designation are vital to exploit and monetize copyrights, especially in light of recent changes and the adoption of the Music Modernization Act, the biggest copyright overhaul in years. Some of the most common disputes include three versions of the same question about ownership: who, what and how much:
1. Who is the author(s) and therefore an owner?
2. What did you contribute? Did you make a copyrightable contribution or were you just in the room? Did you merely suggest a tweak to what was already there (arrangement vs. songwriting)?
3. Splits: Is everyone equal or did some make a lesser or greater contribution? The answer to #2 can influence this.
4. Who will control the copyright?
And, most importantly, how do I collect my money?
NARIP brings you music and entertainment attorney Dean Serwin, Esq. who will discuss the most common songwriter disputes, how to avoid them and provide strategies to protect, enhance and exploit your copyrights.
YOU WILL LEARN
• Manage your metadata: who collects, disseminates and updates rights holder info, and how the not yet formed Mechanical License Collective comes into play?
• Who should file a copyright registration for co-written song
• When to file a copyright registration as a joint or individual work
• Registering with PROs: who should do it and when
• Self-publishing with co-writers
• How to assess split percentages
• Producer participation as a songwriter
• Licensing: who administers and negotiates fees
• What to do when you get a quote request for a co-written song
• Death of co-writer: now what?
• Copyright transfer
• Works for hire

What exactly about an artist’s live show makes his fans want to pay a ticket charge, bar minimum and/or cover, and drive across town in traffic rather than just stream his music again?
Emmy-Nominated Creative Director Jonathan Tessero – who has directed from Broadway to Beyonce, from Super Bowl to global brand events – answers this question and others.
Join this special program to hear his top ten tips and strategies to make every live show one that will engage the audience, create more fans and make it an event to remember. Best of all, these tips require no expenditure.
TOPICS
- Coordinate: Choreography and costumes or even a lighting rig aren’t necessary to present a strong visual identity.
- Camaraderie & Chemistry: While they should NEVER tell it during a show, all bands have a story. An artist should create short running jokes based on his history and help his audiences see his (or the band’s) personalities. Remember, chemistry is part of a great show!
- Be Creative: Re-imagining your own songs in new and interesting way is a great start to giving your audience an experience.
- Covers: Covers are a great way to bring a new element to original music. Even just a well-placed chorus of a beloved classic into an
original song is a great way to help an audiences feel more familiar with an artist’s show.
- Coach: Are audiences used to seeing the artist in a bar? At a standing concert venue? Or at a seated theater? Remember that as
formats change, an audience isn’t always sure of the rules. Help them! If you want them to stand and dance, encourage them to do so.
- Click Track: Not just a great thing to get into the habit of using during practice, a well-programmed click track will also help maintain a show’s flow and keep the dead air between songs to a minimum.
ALSO
- 5 things to avoid during a LIVE performance
These tips and others will be discussed in detail by our special guest.

Digital First Impressions:
How To Get A Response
Tue Mar 30, 2021 at 3pm PST
with Tess Taylor, President
National Association of Record Industry Professionals
When you email a music buyer, you can be sure one hundred other people are doing the same.
So how do you get the recipient to open your email and respond?
Copy-and-paste emails don’t work.
Instead, show people that you appreciate their time by sending clear, well-researched, short emails and then your response rate will go up.
NARIP President Tess Taylor shares how to get through to music buyers and other busy people. With a 95%+ response rate to her inquiries and outreach, she has amassed a quiver of arrows you’ll want to learn and then use yourself, including:
- Digital signatures
- Little-known information sources
- Referrals & recommendations
- Telephone etiquette
BONUS: Sample of a great email pitch.

ABOUT JOE POINDEXTER, A&R Executive:
Joe Poindexter has amassed diverse experience in his 6 years in the music business. He grew up in Lincoln, NE with early intentions of becoming a politician, but his plans for the future quickly changed after being introduced to the music business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Joe’s career in the music business began as a College Representative for the Universal Music Group, where he spent hours canvassing the University’s campus with posters and stickers for the company’s priority artists. He also tracked radio airplay and coordinated events for Universal artists that came through town on tour.
Graduating in 2000, Joe relocated to Los Angeles with a job opportunity in the sales department at Columbia Records. He helped break artists like Pete Yorn, John Mayer, Five For Fighting, Lostprophets and Crazy Town, through aggressive artist development retail campaigns. In his tenure at Columbia Records, Joe expanded his knowledge about the distribution side of the music business and learned how important artist development can be.
After Columbia Records, Joe received an offer from Q Prime Management (Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shania Twain, Muse, Nickel Creek, Gillian Welch). While at Q Prime, Joe was exposed to the world of artist management, radio promotion, and tour marketing. It was a tremendous learning experience at Q Prime and helped diversify Joe’s knowledge of the “complete” music business.
Joe accepted an offer to become the Director of A&R at Elementree Records (a Geffen Records imprint), and spent 3 years there. He took on A&R responsibilities for Deadsy, a band fronted by Elijah Blue Allman (son of Cher and Greg Allman) who Jonathan Davis of Korn discovered back in 1999. He also signed The Drama and worked with The Suicide Girls. His experience at Elementree Records allowed him to diversify his relationships in the music business.
Joe intends to lead the next generation of executives in the music business by combining forward thinking with a preservation of the ideals set out by the first generation.

Co-writing Songs: Legal & Creative Issues
How To Avoid Songwriter Disputes
With Dean Serwin, Esq.
Wed Sep 8 at 10:30am PST
Photo: Dean Serwin, Esq.
What happens when two or more people co-write a song? Failure to communicate clearly or agree on splits can result in disputes that are time-consuming, expensive and unnecessary. Worse, an encumbered copyright cannot be exploited.
Organization and rights designation are vital to exploit and monetize copyrights. Some of the most common disputes include three versions of the same question about ownership: who, what and how much:
- Who is the author(s) and therefore an owner?
- What did you contribute? Did you make a copyrightable contribution or were you just in the room? Did you merely suggest a tweak to what was already there (arrangement vs. songwriting)?
- Splits: Is everyone equal or did some make a lesser or greater contribution? The answer to #2 can influence this.
- Who will control the copyright?
And, most importantly:
- How do I collect my money?
NARIP brings you music and entertainment attorney Dean Serwin, Esq. who will discuss the most common songwriter disputes, how to avoid them and provide strategies to protect, enhance and exploit your copyrights.
TOPICS
- Manage your metadata: who collects, disseminates and updates rights holder info, and how the Mechanical License Collective comes into play
- Who should file a copyright registration for co-written song
- When to file a copyright registration as a joint or individual work
- Registering with PROs: who should do it and when
- Self-publishing with co-writers
- How to assess split percentages
- Producer participation as a songwriter
- Licensing: who administers and negotiates fees
- What to do when you get a quote request for a co-written song
- Death of co-writer: now what?
- Copyright transfer
- Works for hire

ABOUT DEAN SERWIN, ESQ.
Dean Sheldon Serwin began his legal career upon graduation from UCLA Law School in 1990, and expanded into general entertainment industry consulting when he opened his own law practice in 1994, formally rebranding as Serwin Media Group, or “SMG” in 2018. As a transactional attorney, Dean provides both legal and general consulting services in connection with all aspects of the entertainment and related industries, primarily, but not exclusively, in music. Dean also handles trademarks in all industries.
Prior to establishing his own private practice, Dean held various positions including stints at the Director’s Guild of America, BMI and Capitol Records; as head of legal and business affairs for a film and TV production and distribution company; and finally with another sole practitioner representing several platinum artists. Dean has addressed various industry groups and moderated or participated in panel discussions at several industry conferences. SMG also operates a successful small record label. As Dean likes to say, SMG represents creative people and those who exploit the results and proceeds of their services, where “exploit” in that sentence is a positive thing. Outside of the law, Dean sits on various boards and committees and is deeply involved in local political, financial, artistic and cultural matters in South Pasadena where he lives with Lynn, his wife of 20 years, 18 year old twins Liam & Rachel, and dog, Dusty.
Dean’s South Pasadena, CA based solo practice began in 1994 and serves clients in all areas of the music, film, video, TV, internet, distribution and social media industries, including record labels; music publishers; recordings artists; songwriters; composers and music production libraries; music, television and film producers; social media personalities; managers; television, film, internet, commercial and video game production and distribution companies, business executives and consultants; motivational speakers; authors; clothing and other merchandise companies; as well as others involved within the entertainment and related industries.

BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES Free Movie Screening Hosted by NARIP San Francisco
You are invited to attend a special FREE screening of “Before the Music Dies” starring Erykah Badu, Dave Matthews, Bonnie Raitt, Branford Marsalis, Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello, Questlove, Billy Preston and others…. This is a MUST-SEE for music industry professionals, artists and fans! Bring your clients, colleagues, family & friends.
BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES tells the story of American music at this precarious moment. Filmmakers Andrew Shapter and Joel Rasmussen traveled around the country, hoping to understand why mainstream music seems so packaged and repetitive, and whether corporations really had the power to silence musical innovation. Never have so few companies controlled so much of the music played on the radio and for sale at retail stores. At the same time, there are more bands and more ways to discover their music than ever. Music seems to have split in two – the homogenous corporate product that is spoonfed to consumers and the diverse independent music that finds devoted fans online and at clubs across the country. The answers they found on this journey–ultimately, the promise that the future holds–are what makes BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES both riveting and exhilarating.

ZACH KATZ
“Navigating through the music business is like living in the Matrix”, says Zach Katz. “If you don’t have Neo as your guide, you’re lost.” In an ever-changing industry where no one or nothing is really who or what they seem to be, success depends largely on who is guiding your career. For over a decade Zach Katz, as a music attorney, music executive and manager, has guided the careers of some of the industry’s most important artists and producers.
Katz earned his Juris Doctorate from Loyola School of Law in 1996 and went into private practice in his home city of Los Angeles. He quickly found success and became the go-to guy for numerous notable artists, producers, record labels, distributors and publishing companies who heard about the young music attorney with a true love for music, particularly hip-hop. “I was never satisfied with just drafting and negotiating agreements. Securing endorsements, merchandising opportunities, and touring engagements for my clients were prominent parts of my practice”.
This unorthodox “lawyering” became a natural transition into the next stage of Katz’s career in the music industry. In 2000, one of his legal clients Groove Attack GMBH, a European music distribution powerhouse, decided to launch a U.S. hip-hop record label. Based on his work with Groove Attack, Katz was asked to become the CEO of the new enterprise. During his two years as the company’s CEO, Katz supervised the production, distribution and marketing of several critically acclaimed albums, including the solo album from A Tribe Called Quest’s Phife Dawg. Phife’s album went on to sell more than one hundred thousand units in the United States alone. Katz’s work with Groove Attack largely took him away from his work as a lawyer, a place he was not eager to return.
In 2001 while Katz was legally representing producer extraordinaire Hi-Tek, the opportunity to become Hi-Tek’s manager opened up. With his first management client seeing immediate success as a producer, artist and music executive under his guidance, Katz knew that he could never be just a lawyer again. “Managing Hi-Tek proved to be very exciting. As a manager I had the opportunity to continue the creative work that I began as the CEO of Groove Attack. But it was very challenging to prove to the people around me that someone who was once a lawyer had the creative vision to be a music manager. At first, many people simply didn’t want to see me in my new role,” he explains. The non-believers were quickly converted when Katz expanded his management roster to include the legendary rapper Rakim. “When I officially became Rakim’s manager, people had to accept that I was in the management game. Rakim is one of the most respected people in the music industry. Everyone knows that he’s extremely selective about the people he surrounds himself with.”
As Rakim’s manager, Zach Katz saw tremendous potential to expand his client’s hip-hop icon status into an equally sizeable brand name. Thinking on a global level, Zach Katz successfully identified and forged relationships with corporate entities, who naturally fit the class, integrity and uniqueness of Rakim’s brand. The first of these brand marriages was with Reebok, who created a national Rakim Classic campaign. The campaign was an equally huge success for both Reebok and Rakim. The second branding opportunity came when Zach Katz successfully pitched and landed the Never Blend In campaign with Hennessy. The Never Blend In campaign was a perfect match for Rakim, who’s unmistakable class and style has stood out from its inception. The Hennessy campaign ran for nearly three years via full page advertisements in music’s most credible publications.
As Rakim and Hi-Tek’s manager Katz quickly forged a strong alliance with Aftermath. “Managing Rakim while he was signed to Aftermath, I spent countless nights in the studio with Dr. Dre and witnessed him at work. Many people would pay top dollar to see what I saw and learn what I learned from Dre. I got to see the science behind some of people’s favorite rap records. And I paid very close attention to everything,” explains Zach Katz.
With music producer management as his primary focus from 2002 through 2005, Katz represented some of today’s most notable urban producers. In addition to managing Hi-Tek, he added Denaun Porter p/k/a Konartis of D-12 to his roster. Under Katz’s guidance Denaun went on to produce 50 Cent’s smash single “P.I.M.P.”, G-Unit’s smash single “Stunt 101” along with singles for D-12 and Young Buck. With Katz’s producer clients contributing to worldwide record sales of over 50 million units, Katz felt that things couldn’t be better. This was until he discovered Jonathan “J.R.” Rotem.
“I knew there was something extraordinary about J.R. from the day I first heard his music”, says Zach Katz of his exclusive management client and business partner. “I had never before heard such unique musical ideas”. A classically trained pianist from the age of five, J.R. was a young digital Mozart with a relentless drive to be among the producer elite. “I had never worked with such a focused and humble person before. He put his complete faith into my creative and business guidance and literally worked around the clock,” explains Mr. Katz. The new team’s work quickly paid off as J.R. landed one placement after another, adding up to more than 200 songs produced and placed in just three years. And just as astounding as the number of J.R.’s placements is the versatility of his work. These placements include songs for Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Game, Snoop, Lil Kim, Lil Scrappy, Rick Ross, Fabulous, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Whitney Houston, Paris Hilton, Chamellionare, Natasha Bedingfield, Jojo, Jesse McCartney, Leona Lewis and Ashley Tisdale, just to name a few. J.R. singles highlights include Rihanna’s worldwide #1 smash “S.O.S.”, Rick Ross’s street anthem “Push It To The Limit”, 50 Cent’s single “Best Friend”, Chamellionare’s “Hip-Hop Police” and Ashley Tisdale’s “He Said She Said.” J.R. ended 2006 with the highest honors when MTV named him “Superproducer of 2006” along with only Timbaland, Swizz Beats and Sean Garret.
In 2007, Mr. Katz’s work with J.R. led to the formation of their media company called Beluga Heights, which on the record side has a joint venture label deal with Epic/Sony. “The deal with Epic was designed so that J.R. will be the musical ear and face of the labe,” explains Katz, J.R.’s partner in the venture and the company’s CEO. The multi-million dollar joint venture is off to an amazing start with the commercially successful release of its first artist Sean Kingston. J.R. produced the entire album including the chart-topping smash singles “Beautiful Girls” and “Take You There”. And 2008 looks promising for Beluga Heights as they add two more new artists to their roster.
Always planning his next move, Zach Katz is focused on building Beluga Heights into a full service record label and music publishing company. With the Epic joint venture already in place on the record side Beluga Heights is now entertaining offers from the industry’s biggest music publishing companies who want to be in business with Beluga Heights’ hit factory song writers. “J.R. and I constantly push each other and our team to bring our A-game to the table. We want to surround ourselves with talented artists, writers and executives who are prepared to dedicate the time and energy its going to take to build the creative and business blueprint for the next twenty years,” says Katz. With that kind of vision and dedication, Zach Katz and Beluga Heights are sure to win.
