Music In Advertising & Branding:
A Conversation -w- Coca-Cola’s Umut Özaydinli

on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 in Atlanta

Imagine performing for over one billion people – the single largest audience in the world – and having your song go to #1 in 17 countries, becoming an international overnight sensation and unseating multi-platinum winning artists in the process.

That’s what happened to K’NAAN, the Somalian rapper-poet whose song “Wavin’ Flag” was selected to be the official Coca-Cola anthem.

Using music to boost advertising and marketing can have enormous positive results for both brands and bands. In fact, matching bands (or music) with brands is one of the hottest and fastest growing areas of the business today.

Once taboo, brand associations and advertising are embraced by today’s savvy recording artists and their reps to increase exposure to their music and advance their careers.

Music, advertising, brand and marketing executives need to know how to create win-win deals like K’NAAN’s.

That’s why NARIP has invited Umut Özaydinli, a top executive from the world’s most recognizable brand – Coca-Cola – to discuss how to pair music and artists with brands. A main architect of the K’NAAN deal, Umut has also been instrumental in other global campaigns, including the 2008 Chinese Olympics project which paired music and graphic artists to create one-of-a-kind Coca-Cola souvenir bottles and songs to connect culture, music and art.

In our conversation with Umut, we will explore opportunities available for developing artists and the complex rights area. He will provide insight into how to use brand association for new and established acts, how to create win-win deals and give a glimpse into what the future of music-in-branding may hold.

How can artists and their reps access billion dollar brands? How can brands access appropriate talent? Out program will focus on how these deals are done, who does them, how they work and what they cost. Attendees will receive information to identify and secure the right match.

Don’t miss this opportunity to meet an executive from the world’s top brand who can help take your campaign to the next level.

YOU WILL LEARN:

  • How to “A&R” a brand and connect consumers to brands through the emotional power of music
  • Selling in, not selling out: what deals make dollars and sense
  • How to prepare a brief and package ideas to attract and secure a brand
  • How to identify and secure an artist
  • How artists can add value to an ad campaign
  • Deal points: money, splits, fee ranges, negotiation tactics
  • Rights and licensing issues
  • Who puts these deals together, and how?
  • When art meets commerce: accommodations artists and brands must make

SOME BENEFITS YOU WILL RECEIVE:

  • Demystify deal-making in the music business – learn which rights you need to proceed
  • Take home a rule book for success, including case studies, checklists, deal points, do’s and don’t’s to create successful promotions and marketing campaigns with music
  • Hear senior management perspectives and world-class music-brand strategies
  • Meet a taste-maker and star-maker who represents one of the world’s top brands
  • Understand who sets music strategy for brands and how they do it

Brand Marketing & Creative Advertising Executives
Producers, Artists, Artist Managers and Artist Reps

Accountants, Business Managers & CPAs

2010-07-21 In ATL – Mock Negotiation of 360 Record Deal

ART OF THE MUSIC DEAL:
What Happens Before You $ign on the Dotted Line?

Mock Negotiation of
a 360 Record Deal

on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 in Atlanta

With major changes in recording agreements over the past three years, multiple rights or so-called “360 deals” have become more common. In this latest installment of NARIP’s “Art of the Music Deal” series, two top music business attorneys face off in a live negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues that affect an artist’s rights and income, and a record company’s ability to acquire and monetize additional rights.

These experts come together to give you the inside track on major deal points, what they mean and what leverage you have to negotiate the best possible deal.

Most people think they can just hand a negotiation to a lawyer, and leave it at that. But as a professional, you need to be aware of the process and deal points, too, and what the short- and long-term implications to your artists’ careers may be.

Most importantly, you will see HOW a 360 deal is negotiated and be involved in the process.

Get educated about the art of deal-making!

You will learn eight (8) major areas of negotiation for record deals:

1. Artist advance / recording fund
2. Controlled composition clause
3. Guaranteed release clause
4. Pay or play clause
5. No cross-collateralization / separate “pot” for master-tone, voice-tone and DVD monies
6. Tour support / marketing and promotion commitment (videos, etc.)
7. Artist royalty and royalties payable on foreign sales
8. 360 deals: try to limit other ancillary rights (i.e., merchandise, publishing, touring, sponsorships, etc.)

This program will also cover:

– Multiple rights: what are they?
– How to minimize a record company’s involvement in additional rights
– How to obligate a record company to monetize additional rights and maximize returns from a 360 deal
– Important deal points including new 360 provisions, ancillary rights, digital royalties, a discussion of the new publishing royalty rates for mobile, digital downloads, and interactive streaming services.
– The right time to make a deal
– 360 deals for developing artists

Ian Burke, Burke Stone Management

There are very few individuals left in the world of music publishing who boast the resume of Ian Burke. The son of a musician first got his feet wet some 20 years ago while doing road work for a local Atlanta band. “That’s when I decided I wanted to make it a career in Atlanta,” Burke says. Since then he has been involved with the launch of some of the city’s most established acts. The birth of Burke’s career was as the South East Director of A&R, for Elektra Records (part of the WEA Corp.), where he focused on music quality over song quantity. Burke’s stint at Elektra included signing the teen R&B group Mista, which featured a young Bobby Valentino, and super producer and current chart-topping Akon. While there, he also helped introduce the world to one of Atlanta’s signature genres, “Bass Music,” by picking up the independent single, “Bankhead Bounce,” by Diamond & D-Rock (half of the crunk duo, the Ying-Yang twins). Other accomplishments during his tenure there included, spearheading special events such as the Church Fire Benefit Concert in Atlanta, which aided in the restoration of churches burned throughout the south. The concert featured Mista, Akon, Keith Sweat, Silk, Michael Speaks, Goodie Mob and Kut Klose and raised over $50,000.00 in donations. After his tenure at Elektra, Burke accepted the position of Senior Director of Creative Affairs for ASCAP (American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers) in Atlanta, where he set out to introduce new sounds and talent from the south. Some of the projects he put his stamp on, as an independent manager and A&R consultant, included Arrested Development (Chrysalis/EMI), TLC and Outkast (LaFace/Arista), Kris- Kross (Ruff House/Columbia), and Xscape (SoSoDef). With nearly two decades of experience, Burke left ASCAP to launch several independent ventures. Continuing his passion for discovering, developing and creating opportunities for established and up and coming artists, Burke launched Launch Pad Records, LLC, a consulting and artist development firm. Presently, Burke’s expanding his publishing experience to include aspiring screenwriters, producers and directors with Pelham Picture House Projects.

Russell R. Sauvé, E-Commerce and Social Media Manager, The Fox Theatre

Russell Sauvé is the E-Commerce and Social Media Manager for the Fox Theatre where he guides all content creation and publishing to various static and interactive platforms. Prior to joining the Fox, Russ was the Event Services Manager for The Cobb Galleria in Atlanta, Georgia, and Event Coordinator and Theatre Manager for The Classic Center in Athens, Georgia. In his spare time Russ enjoys spending time with friends, his wife Ellen, and their 2 year old daughter Tess, who will one day be an astronaut, President of the United States, and baseball’s 1st female Cy Young award winner.

Samantha Parvin, NARIP Atlanta Board Member (moderator)

Sam began her music industry career planning, promoting, implementing and fundraising for music-based events in Charleston, SC. After a stint at a music festival promotions company and another at a booking agency, Sam landed a job as Doppler Studios’ Radio Traffic Manager. She has since developed a public relations program at Atlanta’s premier audio services facility and represents the 40-year-old studio’s already stellar reputation. As a fervent networker and devout believer in good old-fashioned honesty and hard work, Samantha employs her learned PR skills in her own personal branding initiatives. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Jesse James Dupree, Founder, Mighty Loud Entertainment
Lead Singer of Jackyl
Full Throttle Saloon, Entertainment Director
Series Executive Producer

It should come as no surprise that one of the hardest working frontmen in rock and roll is as active behind the scenes as he is onstage. Jesse James Dupree is well known as the chainsaw-wielding leader of southern rock staples Jackyl, but over the last decade he’s steadily built a multimedia empire – Mighty Loud Entertainment. Jesse and his multi-faceted entertainment company, Mighty Loud have created and Executive Produced the smash TruTV series Full Throttle Saloon, a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run the world’s biggest biker bar in Sturgis, SD. Full Throttle Saloon was a top 5 cable program and pulled the highest ratings to date for the Turner network’s TruTV. Dupree previously acted as creator and Executive Producer of the Emmy-nominated MTV series Two-A-Days, and numerous pay-per-view specials including Sturgis Exposed and Mardi Gras Exposed, and the Dirt Poor Comedy Show. A versatile player in the entertainment industry, Jesse James Dupree is the General Manager for Kiefer Sutherland’s entertainment company, Ironworks, and a consultant for New West Records, best known for its roster which includes artists such as Dwight Yoakam and Kris Kristofferson, and the Live From Austin, TX series. Jesse has launched his own line of beer, Jesse James America’s Outlaw Beer which is featured prominently in the upcoming season of Full Throttle Saloon.

Rich Masio, Founder, The Department of Public Works

With over 2 decades of experience in the digital and physical worlds, last year Rich departed a six-year tenure from the world’s leading digital distributor IODA to launch his consulting practice, The Department of Public Works. His clients include media companies that require digital and mobile strategy, distributors and record companies, and his services include domestic and international licensing for physical and digital deals. In 2005, after spending four years in leadership roles at two independent physical distributors, Big Daddy and Sheridan Square’s Musicrama/MDM Division, Rich joined IODA in its infancy. Traveling around the world, Rich licensed and managed top catalogs for digital distribution deals, including mobile and marketing support. He led the development of IODA’s foray into digital video distribution where he supervised content acquisition and helped strike deals with Apple, Netflix and Amazon while leading the company’s internal teams to support the category. Before IODA, Rich spent time at two other seminal online music companies, SonicNet and CDNOW.com. He worked for SonicNet, one of the earliest music social Web sites, which launched on the World Wide Web in April 1995. He worked in media relations, online marketing and managed monthly feature Action Ready Singles. He was Associate Producer of the Tibetan Freedom Concert’s online webcast in 1996, the first online event of its kind. SonicNet was sold to Prodigy Online during Rich’s tenure and ended up as part of Liberty Media and then Viacom/MTV Interactive. In 1997, Rich joined CDNOW.com as its 36th employee (the company ended up with over 450). Rich led product teams to expand editorial and merchandising areas, and supervised those teams before going on to help create what was then the first co-op advertising program for online music retail. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Rich Levy, Senior Vice President, Live Nation

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Levy began working in the concert promotion business at Brusco Barr Presents in 1991. In 1993, Levy formed Alienation Inc., which booked national tours for signed and unsigned acts, as well as talent buying for such notable rooms as The Point and The Dark Horse in Atlanta. Alienation was instrumental in the signing success of James Hall (Geffen), Emmet Swimming (Epic), Skirt (Shanachie) and The Drag (Island). In April 1996, Levy became the Vice President at Concert Southern Promotions where he continued to book the Point and also booked the Cotton Club and the Roxy Theater in Atlanta. He was nominated for Pollstar Nightclub Talent Buyer of the year. Also in 1997 Levy founded the Atlantis Music Conference (which ran through 2008) along with partners Mark Willis and Lee Beitchman. In 1998, Levy became a talent buyer for Cellar Door of the Carolinas, working for his mentor, Wilson Howard. He lived in Atlanta, and booked and covered shows across the Carolinas, Georgia, and Tennessee. During this time he was instrumental in assisting Ted Mankin and Lance Sterling with the opening of the Tabernacle in Atlanta. In 1999, SFX bought Cellar Door Concerts and found themselves in a situation where they owned Cellar Door and Concert / Southern, two competing companies in the same market. Levy was offered a promotion and a new title, Regional Vice President of Southeastern Clubs and Theaters. He relocated to Fort Lauderdale to work with Randy McElrath booking the state of Florida. It was during this time that Levy made some of his first forays into sponsored tours, helping secure talent like 3 Doors Down and Our Lady Peace for tours for Cutty Sark. The next step in this evolution was working with Rick Zeiler on putting together the first Jagermeister Music Tour featuring Drowning Pool. From there Levy went on to work on the Ford Focus tour – all while still handling his day to day booking duties for SFX in Florida. In 2000, Levy’s sole holdover from Alienation, Peter Searcy, was signed to Jim Guerinot’s Time Bomb Label, a BMG-distributed label. Searcy’s debut album was released on Time Bomb/Arista that year. By late 2001, Clear Channel had acquired SFX and Levy put in a personal request to move back to Atlanta. He was able to move back to Atlanta and continue booking the state of Florida with McElrath from the Atlanta office. This continued through 2002. Between the constant travel and his ever growing involvement in the sponsorship division (Levy had worked on three Jagermeister Tours, a Grey Goose Music Tour, the award-winning Miller Rellim Tour, etc.), something had to give. Levy chose to go into developing custom sponsor tours, events, and programs full time. At the beginning of 2003, Bruce Eskowitz and Maureen Ford created a position for him as VP of Booking for National Sales and Marketing. Over the course of this year, Levy was intimately involved in creating / booking talent for programs such as T Mobile All Access, the launch of Adidas Adrenaline, Coors Light Mountain Jam, the Nintendo Fusion Tour, Miller Pure night Out, etc. In 2006, when Clear Channel Entertainment spun off Live Nation into an independent company, Levy was promoted to the position of Senior Vice President of Artist Rights Acquisition. In the ensuing years, Levy has worked extensively with a variety of Fortune 500 companies – advising on and executing music strategy and platforms for companies like Citibank, UPS, Coke, Nikon, AT&T, T Mobile, Major League Baseball, Starwood, and a host of others. With the merger of Ticketmaster and Live Nation, Levy’s responsibilities expanded to include content creation for the company’s growing online division. Today Levy lives in Atlanta with his wife Michelle and dog Max (the Live Nation Atlanta office mascot), reports to Russell Wallach, the President of Live Nation Network, and continues to develop and execute innovative, award winning programs for a variety of corporate clients. Career highlights include producing a show for T Mobile on Alcatraz, putting together the television commercial “Band Camp” featuring Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction for Citibank, helping create the Jagermeister Music Tour franchise, and coming up with the concept for Miller’s whistle stop “Taste Express” train tour featuring Gavin Degraw, winner of the 2007 Event Marketer Magazine award for Best Proprietary Property.

Amanda Moore, Director of Marketing, AEG Live/TMG Nashville

Amanda Moore began her career at Immortal Records as A&R and Promotion Coordinator in 2000. She spent the next six years in radio promotion working with Dreamworks Records, indie Skip Bishop, Artemis Records and finally as VP of Promotion for Vagrant Records where she was eventually laid off during the wrath of Spitzer (though she now jokes that she was terrible at fighting to get songs added, but always knew how to get the stations to get involved with promotion of her artist’s shows). In 2006 she re-connected with Kevin Lyman, whom she’d worked with at Immortal Records, when he hired her to run press for that year’s Vans Warped Tour and in August 2007 she joined 4 Fini as a permanent fixture, working with just 6 other full time employees to produce the highly successful tours Taste of Chaos, International Taste of Chaos, Rockstar Mayhem Festival and the world famous Vans Warped Tour. While at 4 Fini Moore wore many hats, but was best known for her marketing – including spearheading the launch of the now annual Rockstar Mayhem Festival. By her 2009 departure, Amanda was overseeing all publicity, creative and street marketing and artist relations for all tours and was the operations manager for the Vans Warped Tour which over the course of its 46 dates employs some 200 men and women, hosts over 1000 bands and sells over 350,000 tickets. In addition to her work on the production of the tours, Amanda also found time to utilize her relationships and experience for a better cause, founding the now annual Vans Warped Tour TJ Martel Bowling Tournament as well as organizing, collecting donations and auction items, and coordinating publicity for numerous auctions benefiting charities such as Skate For Cancer, American Forests (in conjunction with the Southern California Fires), and Lyman’s own organization Unite The United which raises and distributes over $100,000 annually. Drawn to NY for her now husband, Amanda moved on to 5B Artist Management overseeing all marketing and touring for bands including Wolfmother,Trivium and Slipknot. From there she went to Atlantic Records as Director of Artist Development, largely in part to help update their tour marketing arm in the new world of the 360 deal. In September of 2011, Amanda was offered the opportunity to move to Nashville as Regional Director of Marketing for AEG Live / The Messina Group. The opportunity to work with AEG (a company she’d grown to love during her tenure at 4 Fini) in a city like Nashville – and to get back to her love of “selling tickets” – was too good to pass up, and has proven to be the best decision she’s ever made (aside from marrying her husband of course).

Eddie Owen, Eddie Owen Presents

Born and raised in the Atlanta area, Eddie Owen’s introduction to music included church choirs, school choruses and theater performances which planted the seeds of musical passion. After he met the late Harry Chapin, Eddie turned to playing guitar and writing songs, most of which were performed in his living room. “To be truthful, I was a very poor guitarist and very poor songwriter,” Eddie muses. “That ended up giving me a greater appreciation for those who were not so poor at it.” While attending Georgia State University, Eddie paid his tuition by tending bar at local watering holes. One club was the Trackside Tavern, a new joint in Decatur that opened in 1980. Booking music at the Trackside gave Eddie a crash course in the burgeoning local scene, as its stage was prowled by mostly acoustic music veterans like Caroline Aiken, Dede Vogt, Kodac Harrison and newcomers such as Kristen Hall, Mark Reynolds, Kristian Bush and Andrew Hyra, Shawn Mullins, Matthew Kahler, Gerard McHugh, and of course the Indigo Girls. Because of the caliber of the acts performing there, it wasn’t long before live music became a fixture at the Trackside. Eddie started formulating a plan in October of 1991. It took a few months….then the dream happened. In May of 1992, Eddie’s Attic opened. Over the years, Eddie’s played host to some of the hottest acts to come out of the area including John Mayer, The Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins, India Arie, Angie Aparo, Jennifer Nettles, Sugarland, and Michelle Malone, as well as national touring acts like Sheryl Crowe, Ani DiFranco and Dave Wilcox. Eddie’s Attic became known as “the small intimate listening room in the southeast” and “the place to catch established songwriters as well as the next group of stars”. Along with his many ownership duties, Eddie was hands-on with the band bookings as well. Then in 2002, he decided to sell the club to Todd Van Sickle, husband of popular local musician Jennifer Nettles. After 3-1/2 years of complete severance from Eddie’s, Todd sold the club to Bob Ephlin, whom Eddie had known for years as a supporter of the club and the local music scene. It is an understatement to say that Eddie Owen loves music since he has dedicated a major portion of his life to providing a venue for those who perform it. Whatever the future holds for him, Eddie’s Attic, and its future ventures, he never forgets that the passion not only extends to the musicians and bands themselves, but to the people who come to see them. Eddie has always operated Eddie’s Attic as a community of support. In October of 2011, Eddie began a new venture: Eddie Owen Presents at Red Clay Theatre in Duluth, GA. Eddie now manages and books RCT full time.

Eddie Owen’s advice for performing songwriters: Play, play, play, play. Write, write, write, write. Meet, meet, meet, meet.

How To Place Songs in Film, TV, Ads and Video:
Make The Pitch and Close The Deal

Presented by the National Association of Record Industry Professionals

Call in to this special NARIP Teleseminar

Tuesday, February 24, 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Pacific
(3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Eastern)

Each month, NARIP features top record executives in a live, interactive teleseminar. These experts will describe their jobs from benefits to pitfalls, and provide insight as to what works and what doesn’t. Get facts, ask questions and hear answers.

SESSION #2: How To Place Songs in Film, TV, Ads and Video
Meet our expert: Ron Broitman, Senior VP Film, TV & Advertising Music, Sony/ATV Music Publishing

According to Billboard magazine (in “The Maximum Exposure List” September 2008), among the 100 ways for music to receive exposure and cut through clutter, 7 of the top 10 ways include song placement. Music placement has increased dramatically in importance with the proliferation of media channels, and the competition is fierce as more artists and their reps throw their hat (er, songs) into the synch ring.

Success in synch licensing requires relationship-building, patience, organization, follow-up and understanding the needs of the music buyer.

In this NARIP program, Sony/ATV Music Publishing’s Ron Broitman will discuss strategies and information sources he uses to exploit Sony/ATV’s catalog and share tips on how to pitch and place music in television, films, movie trailers, video games and advertising. Most importantly, he will discuss how to make and close these deals… and keep music buyers coming back for more.

YOU WILL LEARN

  • Day in the life – snapshot of a top Sony/ATV Music Publishing executive’s job
  • Case studies: what worked, what didn’t and why
  • Making the pitch: necessary elements
  • Important deal points
  • Closing the deal
  • Timing
  • Budgets & fee ranges
  • Things to avoid
  • What music buyers really look for including music supervisors, ad agencies and gaming companies.
  • How to increase the impact and marketability of music

Don’t miss this insider’s peek at the music placement realities of the fastest-changing business in the world. Most importantly, this program gives you practical information you can apply immediately to make better pitches and land placements NOW.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Mr. Broitman manages a 16-person department that pitches and negotiates all of Sony/ATV’s repertoire (including the recently purchased Famous Music catalog) in the areas of commercials, film/film trailers, TV, video games, merchandising, and any other audio visual uses. Ron joined Sony/ATV after a ten-year career at BMG Music Publishing U.S., where he most recently served as Vice President, Film, TV & Advertising Music. In that capacity, he managed the day-to-day activities of the synchronization department representing the BMG and Zomba Music Publishing catalogs, including a two–year position overseeing all of the music publishing catalogs and all BMG record labels (RCA, Arista and Jive, among others) in the film, TV and advertising areas. He has played an instrumental role in placing and negotiating songs in high profile advertising campaigns, films, television shows, video games and new media projects. Some recent campaigns include Target, Chase, Coors, Coke, Pepsi, Chevrolet, Mitsubishi, VW, Sprint, Mercedes Benz, Nissan, GAP, Levi’s and AT&T among many others. Prior to joining BMG, Ron worked in commercial production at Propaganda Films. He also holds an economics degree from UCLA and a law degree from Cornell Law School.

2018-10-17 House Concerts & Alternate Performance Venues: More Fans, More Fun, More Money
×

NARIP-Alternate-Venues

Wed Oct 17 in Atlanta

The world is a stage said Shakespeare, and today more so than ever with many spaces being converted into performance venues.  These include homes, art galleries, shopping malls, retirement homes, subway stations and prisons.

Many have discovered the power and intimacy of house concerts, surpassing club shows in every way: more fun, more profitable and more new fans.  Fans are thrilled to learn they can bring the fun (and favorite artists) to their homes. In marketing, nothing holds more weight than a personal recommendation.  And so when a house concert host handpicks a guest list of his own personal friends and then gives an artist the ultimate recommendation in front of them – a group of highly targeted potential fans – that’s valuable.  House concerts can be billed as networking events the host and existing fans hold to introduce you and your music to THEIR friends.  Likewise, art galleries create a beautiful alternate environment, and many artists have created meaningful engagement performing at malls, retirement homes and prisons. Join NARIP and special guests at this program to learn how to plan and execute a successful house concert and alternate venues tour. YOU WILL LEARN
  • For whom can house concerts or alternate venues work?
  • Benefits: direct-to-fan, hyperlocalism, growing superfans
  • Elements of a successful house concert
  • Finding the right host, helping host plan successful house concert
  • The space: do’s and don’ts, how to focus audience, maximize intimacy and connectivity
  • The guests
  • Set-up and flow: how to pace the evening
  • Donations: how to work with host for financially successful event
  • How to sell stuff: create awareness, be effective, make more money
  • Post show
  • Tour routing: strategies for a well-structured tour

With ten bands on its roster in various stages of recording and touring, Juliett developed album release plans, secured tour press, and elevated the label to become one of the strongest indie record labels in Atlanta. She realized that many people in the DIY music scene often went unnoticed and unrecognized for their hard work supporting artists, causing her to create the Atlanta Record Label Fest in 2015.  The event showcases people behind the scenes and serves indie record labels by creating an opportunity for networking and building community.  It also serves fans with cutting-edge musical artists, bridging gaps between genres and sub-cultures. Its first year, the Atlanta Record Label Fest drew hundreds of people and brought together record labels and music fans.  The second year (2016) saw the event expanded to two days and included indie record labels from across the state of Georgia. In 2017 Juliett expanded her artist management and consulting business for independent and DIY artists with Panther Creek Artist Management. She also started working with Atlanta independent record label Madison Records (Orchard/Sony) on digital marketing and project management initiatives. Juliett has combined her love of music and technology as a Co-Founder and Head of Client Relationships and Marketing with Bandskor, which is building a dashboard to help talent buyers manage and analyze band submissions. Juliett is active not only in the Atlanta music scene, but also with organizations like National Association of Record Industry Professionals (NARIP.com) and the Atlanta Chapter of the Recording Academy. She understands the need for education, networking, and supporting fellow friends and artists. You can often find her at a show, or hanging out with bands waxing poetic on the value of having a Web site and an email list.

In 2011 Shannon Curtis got a Facebook message from a fan in San Diego inviting her to play there and offering her living room as a venue. The fan said she’d invite friends to come and ask them for donations to support the event.

This turned into one of the best and most rewarding shows Shannon had ever played.

Fast forward: Shannon’s 2-month house concert tour in 2013 made over $25,000. She found her house concert tours surpassing club shows in every way: more fun, more profitable and more new fans.

We’ve invited Shannon to share her experience and How-To because her strategy can be applied to so many. She’s written a book detailing her experience which we at NARIP purchased and highly recommend.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Tess Taylor, President
National Association of Record Industry Professionals

Tess Taylor is president of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals, the biggest music business network in the world. She is creator of NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions which have yielded almost 200 music placements for participants and sold out in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Paris and London.

Ms. Taylor is also President of the LA Music Network (LAMN.com, est. 1988) and creator of the LAMN Jam Music Contests which launched the Mowglis, a pop band selected to perform at the 2011 LAMN Jam. The band won first prize, were immediately signed to a management deal, then signed with Universal / Photo Finish Records. They have been featured on prime time network TV, have made feature music placements in major motion pictures, they now get radio airplay in primary market stations and have sold out shows across the US. LAMN Jam Music Contests also helped launch Grammy winner Tim Fagan (2006 LAMN Jam winner), Aloe Blacc (2007 LAMN Jam winner) and hosted 5-time Grammy Award-winner Victor Wooten.

One of the nation’s leading authorities on careers in the music and record industries, Ms. Taylor has connected countless people to jobs and opportunities through her work in the US and abroad, cultivated collaborations for over two decades, helped launch hundreds of projects and several companies. If you’ve read Malcolm Gladwell’s book The Tipping Point then you may recognize her as a “super-connector.” Says Hollywood Today Publisher & Editor Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn, “Tess Taylor is one of the great resources of the music business. She’s a walking job fair. She has amazing insights into where the business is going and combines that savvy with a Rolodex the size of an SUV.” Music Connection magazine named Ms. Taylor in its list of “50 Innovators, Iconoclasts, Groundbreakers & Guiding Lights of 2008” (Dec 2008). Dubbed “International Music Ambassador” by music supervisor P.J. Bloom (Glee, CSI: Miami) and the “Job Whisperer” by Loy Connelly, Ms. Taylor works with many international groups to connect their members to opportunities in Los Angeles and throughout the U.S. She has consulted leading businesses such as InsideSessions (a joint venture between the Universal Music Group and Penguin Putnam, Inc.), The Walt Disney Company, BMG Entertainment (formerly Sony BMG), Concord Records and MySpace.com in its start-up phase. Recent keynotes include Popkomm (Berlin), the Drucker Career Conference (LA), the Trigger Creative Conference (Sweden), the University of Vienna’s Institute für Popularmusik (Austria), NAMM 2011 (LA), the CA Music Industry Summit, Berlin Music Week and others.

Deeply annoyed by people who think music should be free, Ms. Taylor is a vigorous defender of intellectual property rights and debated Electronic Frontier Foundation co-founder John Perry Barlow on “free music” at the Univ. of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (2006) and was invited for a rematch at Ohio Univ. (2008). She won both times. She lectures throughout the US and around the world (in 12 countries to date), including at the Harvard Business School, in Berlin, Bangalore and beyond. From 1988 to 1993 Ms. Taylor was employed at MCA Records, Inc., last serving as Associate Director of Marketing. A classically trained pianist, she studied music at the University of Vienna and is a Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Redlands’ Johnston College where she received her BA degree in music, German and literature. She loves traveling the world, nibbling dark chocolates and drinks lots of tea. She also loves fine fountain pens, anything written or recorded by Glenn Gould or Pete Townshend, gripping crime novels and hiking with her handsome English cocker spaniel Haribo.

In addition to running NARIP and LAMN, Ms. Taylor provides private, fee-based consulting services for people who want more personalized attention.
