You are invited to NARIP’s Digital Music Rights Deal Mock Negotiation with Alan S. Clarke, Esq. & Kendall Minter, Esq. Wednesday, October 16, 2013 in Atlanta, GA Especially important are the distinctions between digital-only deals (where in many cases companies may represent themselves as labels but are in fact only modified music libraries) vs. actual record deals. Both have advantages. Advantages of each type of deal will be discussed at this NARIP program, and our experts will explain what you need to know. They will then face off in a live mock negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues that affect a rights holder’s options and income. Get the inside track on major deal points, what they mean and what leverage you have to negotiate the best possible deal. Also to be discussed: the pros and cons of some of the major digital music services. Most people think they can just hand a negotiation to a lawyer, and leave it at that. But as a professional, you need to be aware of the process and deal points, too, and what the short- and long-term implications to your artists’ careers may be. Most importantly, you will see HOW a digital music license deal is negotiated and be involved in the process. Get educated about the art of deal-making! You need not be a NARIP member to attend. His practice involves facilitating transactions and advising creative individuals in all aspects of the entertainment business, and he has experience representing recording artists, songwriters, producers, production companies, independent record labels, independent music publishers, actors and writers. Gabe’s practice also involves the licensing of music, film and other entertainment-related content on behalf of clients with digital media offerings, and the counseling of celebrities and new media clients with respect to the protection, use and monetization of copyrights, trademarks and publicity rights and other intellectual property and entertainment-related legal issues. Monica Tannian, President, Milk Money Consulting Studio veteran Monica Tannian created Milk Money Consulting, Inc. after a several year stint managing Dallas Austin’s DARP Studios. She started the business to offer support services to the hardest working, least recognized craftsmen of the music business: engineers, songwriters and musicians. Monica got her start setting up band equipment, running lights and negotiating with club owners while managing Philly rock bands in the mid 80’s nights and working at the Bureau of Economics at the University of Delaware by day. Monica gave up the economics field when she found her niche as a studio manager at Kajem Recording. Tucked into an old school, blue blood suburb of Philadelphia, Kajem became an unlikely home for some of the biggest hard rock bands of the late 80’s, like Cinderella, Queensryche and Metal Church. Near the end of Monica’s time at Kajem, she met young up-and-coming producer Dallas Austin, who was recording the first Boyz II Men record. Several years later Dallas brought Monica in to reorganize and manage the faltering DARP (Dallas Austin Recording Projects) Studios. With her help, DARP Studios buoyed to the surface, fiscally and creatively, becoming one of the country’s top recording studios. Monica’s brainstorm for starting Milk Money was a desire to assemble a roster of good, capable engineers, and musician/songwriters to work with. Once she had her trusted crew, Milk Money started to offer its services to producers and studios. It has proven a successful venture.
