DETAILS

A top-rated music supervisor from one of the leading trailer houses in Los Angeles is our special guest at NARIP’s next Music Supervisor Session in Los Angeles: High Bias Industries Music Supervisor Toddrick Spalding. Spalding commissions, licenses and places music for global movie trailer campaigns for the world’s biggest blockbusters and independent films. Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees face-time, registrants get brief of supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback. In NARIP’s intimate session, you get to meet and pitch him for current opportunities.

Trailers have skyrocketed in recent years as an important and lucrative vehicle for music licensing. Synch fees for music in trailers tend to be larger because the rights requested tend to be more broad (worldwide, in perpetuity, used in every possible media). Also, trailers are typically part of a film’s marketing budget rather than its music budget, with film marketing budgets almost always many times larger than music budgets. One senior music executive at Fox Studios says that the music budget for a film is rarely larger than 3% of its overall budget, if that.

NARIP SESSIONS RESULT IN MUSIC PLACEMENT IN #1 BOX OFFICE FILM CHRONICLE

How did NARIP members get music placed in this week’s #1 box office film Chronicle? Through NARIP Music Supervisor Session in LA with Andrea von Foerster – music supervisor for the film that is enjoying a tidal wave of positive reviews and #1 box office success this week (February 6, 2012).

Congratulations to NARIP Member Peter Kimmel who represents another NARIP Member Tom Disher (introduced at a NARIP event in San Francisco). Kimmel placed Disher’s music in Chronicle after meeting von Foerster in Los Angeles at NARIP’s session with her.

And congratulations to Andrea for the rave reviews of her soundtrack choices, and on the success of Chronicle! Read more about Chronicle plus reviews here – and go see the film. Get a front row seat at NARIP’s upcoming sessions, scroll down and register now!

Success For Supervisors: What Andrea von Foerster (500 Days of Summer, Chronicle, Grey’s Anatomy) says about NARIP Sessions

Andrea von Foerster was a guest speaker at NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Berlin and London in 2011. Here’s what she says about them:

“All of the NARIP workshops have proven fruitful for me. I placed a Simon Horrocks track (from Affix Music) in “Don’t Trust The B—- In Apr. 23″ [following NARIP’s Atlanta session]. From the LA session, I used a Peter Kimmel-repped Tom Disher track in Chronicle. In Berlin I met with Christian Mix-Linzer from Tracks & Fields and used a No / Fi Riots song in Chronicle. From the London session I’ve requested Bollywood music from Sharon Dean and met with her artist/composer Biggi Hilmars whom I love! In every city, I’ve met with numerous publishers, labels and sync agents at every level and the relationships have proved invaluable. I’m lucky to be associated with such a great group of people.” Andrea von Foerster, Music Supervisor, Firestarter Music

SUCCESS FOR PARTICIPANTS & BACKGROUND

NARIP members have made placements through these limited enrollment sessions, including most recently Peter Kimmel who has secured multiple placements. These include placing “The Big One” in the film Chronicle, “Soul of a Man Never Dies” in an episode of True Blood and “Jhiara” in an episode of Dexter following NARIP sessions with Andrea von Foerster and Gary Calamar earlier this year in Los Angeles. You can read more about it here.

Placements secured and professional relationships formed through these meetings are so good that we felt this format would work well for those who represent catalogs and/or seek intimate pitch opportunities with the best trailer house music supervisors in the business.

Limited to 16 people, NARIP’s sessions enable you to get to know the supervisors and more importantly, enable them to get to know you. At private sessions last year in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Berlin and London participants were able to pitch for current opportunities on the spot, receiving instant feedback as to whether a song was appropriate or not, and WHY. This valuable feedback makes better pitches – and ultimately, placements – possible. In some cases, participants even had time to re-work their music to better fit a supervisors’ needs.

Above all, attendees MET key players in the modern music business, paving the way for future opportunities and giving them an edge in a highly competitive market.

At our next series in Los Angeles, participants will have the opportunity to pitch music for specific opportunities for current trailer and film promotional campaigns and get immediate, direct feedback from one trailer house music supervisor.

A NEW ACCESS POINT

“We have created an access point that wasn’t available before,” says Tess Taylor, president of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals (NARIP) and creator of the series. “We’re thrilled with the success of these sessions in London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Berlin, as are participants. This broadens the access to music, access that might otherwise not exist. We’re grateful for the positive reception we received in London at our first sessions there in November, and look forward to bringing many more to this city that has produced some of the best-loved music in the world.”

NARIP’s sessions diversify potential usage of music and are appropriate for those who represent catalogs of all sizes.

ABOUT TODDRICK SPALDING

Toddrick Spalding, Music Supervisor, High Bias Industries
Session #2: Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. (current selection)

Toddrick Spalding’s fate was sealed the first time he heard Devo’s “Duty Now For The Future” on his parent’s turntable, it was all downhill from there. He got his start in the industry as founder and drummer of Chicago indie rock band The Detachment Kit. Since those long ago days of constant touring (almost dying at least three times!), Toddrick has built a career in music supervision for film advertising, features, traditional advertising and television. He has worked as Director of Music – Film, TV, and New Media – at Spectre Entertainment Group and as Music Supervisor for film advertising agencies mOcean and The Cimarron Group. His knack for finding the perfect song has helped launch some of Hollywood’s biggest films: Cars 2, Toy Story 3 (biggest animated opening in film history), Inception, Tangled, Red Riding Hood, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, UP, Princess and the Frog, Abduction, Miami Vice, Flags of Our Fathers and others. In 2010 he co-founded High Bias, a music supervision collective in Los Angeles, where he has music-supervised independent features (Littlerock, The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye), traditional advertising (campaigns for Givenchy, Cool Water and others) and continued his work in feature film advertising as a freelance music supervisor (Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, How I Spent My Summer Vacation). In 2011, Toddrick joined the team at independent publisher Spirit Music Group as West Coast Creative Director. He is currently working on filmmaker Mike Ott’s follow-up feature to the critically acclaimed Littlerock and spending as much time as possible with his amazing wife and son.

What attendees say about NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions (with film / TV and ad agency music supervisors) held in 2011 in London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Berlin:

  • “Getting personal and immediate feedback… was very valuable.” – Cathi Gibson, Rough Trade (attended Chris Mollere session in London)

  • “Straight talking honesty, love it! Very rare in this industry, the whole event from start to finish was faultless, best event I have been to by far.” – Guy Stanway, ZY Records (attended Chris Mollere and Andrea von Foerster sessions in London)

  • “Most valuable: honest opinions and face time with the supervisors. The overall quality of the event and the people involved was great – friendly, interesting, informative – and most of all very useful. A lot of these seminars promise a lot and deliver very little – these DO deliver. And after being in the industry 15 years, I feel like I actually learnt something!! Great!!!” – Julie Weir, Visible Noise (attended Chris Mollere and Andrea von Foerster sessions in London)

  • “I had a great time last week and learned a lot. It was a real inspiration … I already feel indebted to you for such a fantastic week, it was very exciting to meet you and the team.” – Sarah Llewelyn, Tonal.org.uk (attended Andrea von Foerster session in London)

  • “I’ve had 3 managers and 5 years of plugging away on the Internet for contacts and had more success getting material in front of a music supervisor with NARIP’s sessions than anything previously! Please keep it up, I will definitely attend more!” – Shay Dillon, Independent (attended Gary Calamar’s session in LA)

  • “I applaud NARIP in establishing these sessions!” – Richard Khuzami, Dahdoo Productions (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • “Such an amazing night … I have been to many such events but have never felt this kind of intimacy and accessibility, and came away feeling like I really made a super connection in the industry. At Jessica [Dierauer’s] session I gave her a CD of 30 and 60 second clips. Her assistant emailed me yesterday (before I even followed up!) to say that they can use some of my tracks and needed some metadata (another lesson I learned at NARIP’s session about imprinting metadata onto all tracks!). So I am thrilled to have made such a great contact in the ad biz because of NARIP. So how can I not attend all your amazing sessions knowing I will make such high level contacts that would have been very difficult for me to have made on my own? I can’t wait for the next session!” and feedback following Ryan Fitch’s session: “Last night’s session with Ryan Fitch was wonderful! Ryan is a straight shooter with class and sensitivity and I got a lot out of the session in terms of what he is looking for. I have made incredible contacts in the advertising business because of NARIP and there is no other music networking group that comes close to what NARIP offers, I’m a fan!” Gail Vareilles, Sandshifter Music (attended 5 sessions in New York with Jessica Dierauer, Paul Greco, Mike Boris, Josh Rabinowitz and Ryan Fitch)

  • “Please keep me informed of the next NARIP sessions in London and LA. Once again, many thanks for the opportunity to pitch.” – Reza Davoudi, Nineteen95 Artist Management (attended Andrea von Foerster’s and Gary Calamar’s sessions in Berlin, and Andrea con Foerster’s and Chris Mollere’s sessions in London)

  • “Was lots of fun and learned a ton of new things. Both Jessica and Ed were great. Also, the anecdotes (e.g. Serge Gainsbourg’s daughter rejecting AXE) are priceless. Thanks again for coordinating these wonderful sessions. I will highly recommend to others.” – David Liang, Shanghai Restoration Project (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York and John Houlihan session in Los Angeles)

  • “Thank you very much for the very interesting pitching session with Andrea at the Popkomm. I would be very keen to take part [in NARIP’s London Supervisor Sessions].” – Christoph Becker, Moanin’ Records (attended Andrea von Foerster’s session in Berlin)

  • “[NARIP’s Music Supervisor series] is a very effective and beneficial program to get contact with the local and national supervisors who run the film and TV industry.” – Robert Case, President, New Pants Publishing (attended Carolyn Richardson, Gary Calamar and Julianne Jordan and sessions in Los Angeles)

  • “Great event with PJ Bloom! Definitely an uncommon opportunity.” and feedback to the Todd Porter San Francisco session: “What a super event last night! Thanks for providing such a unique and excellent opportunity. Where else could I sit down with a top-notch professional like Todd Porter and get immediate feedback on my work? He was very candid and informative, willing to illustrate the ins and outs of the ad business with brilliant clarity. And the chance that he might be able to utilize my music? Invaluable! I’ll be back!” – Joel Evans, Cinemasters (attended PJ Bloom and Todd Porter sessions in San Francisco, and Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • “Thank you once again for a fantastic series of supervisor sessions. Looking forward to many more sessions and events with NARIP… Thank you all for your professionalism, earnestness and care in providing the very best for us. We SO appreciate everything you do. I can see why he was voted a top music supervisor in last year’s NARIP poll! We all went out with Ed [Razzano – program moderator] afterwards (including Ryan) to cap off a great 6-session series [in New York]. I know I speak for all of us, especially the ones like me who attended all of the sessions, when I say that we’re sad that they are ending. – Annie Calder, Coral West Music (attended Chris Mollere’s session in Los Angeles, and 6-part series in New York including sessions with Jessica Dierauer, Jane Scofield, Paul Greco, Mike Boris, Josh Rabinowitz and Ryan Fitch)

  • “I really enjoyed the event and definitely see the value in the intimacy of it. I’m on board for more as well as doing some LA stuff and London… thanks again for putting together such effective events.” – Freddy Charles, Freddy Charles Music (attended 6-part series in New York including sessions with Jessica Dierauer, Jane Scofield, Paul Greco, Mike Boris, Josh Rabinowitz and Ryan Fitch)

  • “Thank you again for providing one of the more professional and useful events that I have ever attended. It was intimate, precise and well-executed. The feedback was immediate and valuable.” – Eric Caver, PTEC Dojo (attended Andrea von Foerster session in Los Angeles)

  • “Another successful and extremely well-organized NARIP event, please keep them coming! … [it was] an amazing opportunity to pitch our music to Gary Calamar in such a personal and focused setting.” – Sven Spieker, Mighty Generation Music (attended Gary Calamar, Andrea von Foerster and Chris Mollere sessions in Los Angeles)

  • “What a wonderful job NARIP is doing in putting together these events that help professionals connect and share information. Kudos to NARIP and your wonderful team.” – Daniel Indart, Latin Music Specialists (attended Chris Mollere and Julianne Jordan sessions in Los Angeles)

Session #2: Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.

Toddrick Spalding’s fate was sealed the first time he heard Devo’s “Duty Now For The Future” on his parent’s turntable, it was all downhill from there. He got his start in the industry as founder and drummer of Chicago indie rock band The Detachment Kit.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR PITCH SESSION PREPARATION IS KEY

NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions are limited to an enrollment of just 16 people.  About one week prior to NARIP’s Session, all registrants will get a brief of the guest supervisor’s then-CURRENT music needs. Each registrant will have a chance to pitch in response to the music briefs provided and get immediate feedback to music pitched. Each participant must submit 7 songs (MP3s only please) 36 hours prior to NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session. Please note that due to time constraints you will only be able to pitch your TOP 3 songs for consideration and immediate feedback (more, if time permits). This process takes the mystery out of why a piece of music does or doesn’t fit. On-the-spot feedback enables registrants to re-work tracks and re-submit, which creates a much higher probability to get them licensed (choose well!).

If you do not have music that matches the current needs of the supervisor, fear not! You can still attend and present the top three songs in your catalog.  Make sure the songs are unique and captivating. This is helpful because a music supervisor’s needs change constantly. To optimize impact of music you pitch at NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session, we highly recommend that you target the briefs. Good luck and see you there!

BEFORE NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:

  • NARIP prepares a one-sheet for each participant including your photo and bio for the guest music supervisor to use and review at the event, and to take with him after the event.  We will request your photo and bio one week prior to the event.  In preparing these materials, we recommend you focus on brief career highlights in your bio and have a professional photo available.
  • Approximately 5 to 7 days prior to NARIP’s Session, you will be sent a project brief describing several cues needed for a current project(s) of our guest speaker.  These often include reference songs or links so that you can hear exactly what he seeks or needs to replace.
  • You will submit your tracks with writer, publisher and other rights holder information that will also be supplied to the music supervisor during and after NARIP’s Session.
  • You will get submission and meta-tagging guidelines, and mentoring as to how best to prepare your music for submission.
DURING NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
  • You will get to play at least three songs (sometimes more, if time permits) for the guest music supervisor who will provide feedback to you for each one.
  • NARIP moderator asks very specific questions to help participants learn and understand how to modify their tracks to make these more place-able for the guest supervisor’s specific needs at hand.
AFTER NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
  • NARIP provides guest music supervisor with participant one-sheets and all music from NARIP’s Session, including notes detailing the guest music supervisor’s interest in specific tracks.
  • If requested by guest music supervisor, NARIP conveys additional tracks, remixes, instrumentals etc. to him.
  • If approved by guest music supervisor, NARIP provides his contact details to registrants.
DON’T GET LOST IN THE CROWD: SMALL IS THE NEW BIG NARIP Sessions are deliberately kept small and intimate, which is just one reason they work so well and why participants have enjoyed over 1,000 placements to date. A NARIP Series: Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Synch Agents

Top music synch agent Julie D’Angelo of Music For The Masses is NARIP’s special guest at our first-ever Ask-Me-Anything event, FREE for current NARIP members with RSVP.  Space is limited, we encourage you to RSVP NOW (just scroll down).

Is your music getting to decision-makers –  people who can say YES and write a check?

Julie is among the first and best sales and marketing executives, or “Synch Agents*,” who actively place music owned by songwriters, composers and independent music publishers.

Many music buyers – directors, producers and music supervisors – name her among their go-to music providers.  Throughout her career, she has placed thousands of songs in blockbuster films, hit television shows, trailers, global promotion and advertising campaigns, and video games.

NOTE: This is NOT a pitch session, no music will be presented or played.  Julie will give us the benefit of her experience and discuss the following:

Topics

  • The state of music synch today
  • Trends in synch licensing
  • How to make music more marketable
  • Do’s and Don’ts in synch licensing
  • Exclusive, non-exclusive, single-song deals
  • Budgets and fee ranges
  • Royalties, copyright ownership, rights retention
  • Fees and deal points between synch agents and their clients
  • Which synch agents seek a transfer of copyright(s) for their services, and under what circumstances
  • Song re-titling

Meet this key player!

* Synch Agent: A synchronization or “synch” agent represents music copyrights – either the composition, the sound recordings, or both.  They pitch music to buyers and their representatives, including to music supervisors.  Synch agents are typically compensated on a commission basis and do not own or control the copyrights they represent.  While synch agents usually focus on entertainment and media exploitations, traditional songplugger services also include placement of represented songs with recording artists.

ABOUT JULIE D’ANGELO

Julie D’Angelo launched Music For The Masses in 2000, representing music from independent artists and labels that seek placement in movies, television, interactive media, and commercials. “I serve those artists who don’t have a direct conduit to get their music in visual media,” she says.  Her roster includes —–  As the former Label General Manager for Rhino Movie Music division of Rhino Entertainment, D’Angelo brings a long track record in film and TV music to Music For The Masses.  Her success representing an eclectic master recordings catalog and managing a soundtrack label [at Rhino] came because, “I had great music to work with and made myself immediately available and responsive to music decision-makers.  The same principles apply to Music For The Masses.  Whether we’re dealing with first-time directors seeking Internet licenses or studios seeking music for large budget features, I respond quickly and fairly, with great repertoire.” During her years as Rhino Movie Music’s GM (1995-1999), D’Angelo oversaw A&R, production/mastering, marketing, and design for soundtracks, concept albums, and boxed sets. Her division was responsible for sales of more than 1.3 million records. She also garnered Rhino two Grammy nominations and one win (Titanic: Music As Heard On The Fateful Voyage). Prior to that, she served as Rhino Entertainment’s Media Licensing Manager, pitching and administering more than 150 licensing requests per month. Over the years, D’Angelo developed a personal, hands-on style to music representation. She remains committed to that approach even as others rush to license music via the Internet. “I’m a ‘not-com,'” says D’Angelo. “Music placement is about relationships, personal service, and getting the right music intro the right hands. My roster is a very manageable size, so I can personally and properly represent each artist’s repertoire.”

Harness the Power of an Independent Commissioned Sales and Marketing Agent to Exploit and Monetize Your Music!

A NARIP Series: Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Synch Agents

Is your music getting to decision-makers –  people who can say YES and write a check? The Synch Agents* featured in NARIP Pitch Sessions are among the top sales and marketing executives who actively place music owned by songwriters, composers and independent music publishers. Many music buyers – directors, producers and music supervisors – name these Synch Agents as among their go-to music providers.  These Agents, who NARIP has researched and interviewed,  have placed thousands of songs in blockbuster films, hit television shows, trailers, global promotion and advertising campaigns, and video games. At NARIP’s intimate sessions, you get to meet and pitch Synch Agents for current placement opportunities and representation, and get immediate feedback. Come meet these career-makers. BACKGROUND Since 2011, NARIP Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions have secured over 1,000 placements in blockbuster films, hit television series, global promotion and advertising campaigns, and trailers for NARIP members.   NARIP members have also secured publishing deals and formed creative collaborations too numerous to mention as a direct result of these NARIP’s Sessions. Topics
  • Trends in synch licensing and agent deals
  • Exclusive, non-exclusive, single-song deals
  • Budgets and fee ranges
  • Royalties, copyright ownership, rights retention
  • Fees and deal points between synch agents and their clients
  • Which synch agents seek a transfer of copyright(s) for their services, and under what circumstances
  • Song re-titling
Small, focused NARIP Sessions enable one-on-one time and immediate direct feedback to music presented by participants.  At hundreds of NARIP Sessions, we asked every guest music supervisor how to better market music to them.  Their one consistent piece of advice?  Get representation! At NARIP Synch Agent Pitch Sessions, limited to 16 people, you get to know the synch agents and they to get to know you. Most important, attendees meet these key players, paving the way for possible representation and ongoing opportunities, and giving them an edge in a competitive market. WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NARIP SYNCH AGENT PITCH SESSION: PREPARATION IS KEY As with NARIP Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions, NARIP’s Synch Agent Pitch Sessions are limited to an enrollment of just 16 people.  About one week prior to NARIP’s Session, all registrants will get a brief of the guest’s then-CURRENT music needs. Each registrant will have a chance to pitch in response to the music briefs provided and get immediate feedback to music pitched. Each participant must submit 7 songs (MP3s only please) 36 hours prior to NARIP’s Synch Agent Pitch Session. If you do not have music that matches the current needs of the guest, fear not! You can still attend and present the top three songs in your catalog.  Make sure the songs are unique and captivating. This is helpful because a music supervisor’s needs change constantly. To optimize impact of music you pitch at NARIP’s Synch Agent Session, we highly recommend that you target the briefs. In addition to pitching for current placement opportunities, NARIP’s guest Synch Agents will consider music pitched for representation.  Good luck and see you there!
BEFORE NARIP’S SYNCH AGENT PITCH SESSION:
  • NARIP prepares a one-sheet for each participant including your photo and bio for the guest to use and review at the event, and to take with him after the event.

BACKGROUND

Since 2011, NARIP Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions have secured over 1,000 placements in blockbuster films, hit television series, global promotion and advertising campaigns, and trailers for NARIP members.

NARIP members have also secured publishing deals and formed creative collaborations too numerous to mention as a direct result of these NARIP’s Sessions.

Topics

  • Access multiple potential buyers and placements

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NARIP SYNCH AGENT PITCH SESSION:

PREPARATION IS KEY

As with NARIP Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions, NARIP’s Synch Agent Pitch Sessions are limited to an enrollment of just 16 people.

BACKGROUND

On the heels of NARIP’s successful Music Supervisor Sessions – intimate meetings with the best music supervisors in the business today – NARIP is proud to introduce its Radio Executive Sessions in the same mold.

Through NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions, NARIP members have made placements in significant projects, including most recently Peter Kimmel who has placed songs from his catalog in True Blood (“Soul of a Man Never Dies”) and in Dexter (“Jhaira”) following our session with Gary Calamar earlier this year in Los Angeles – read more about these exciting placements here.

Placements secured and professional relationships formed through these meetings are so good that we felt this format would work well for those who seek intimate pitch opportunities with the best (and busiest) radio executives at the top-rated stations in town.

LIMITED ENROLLMENT OF ONLY 15 PEOPLE PER SESSION

Limited to 15 people per session, NARIP’s sessions enable you to get to know the executives and more importantly, enable them to get to know you. Participants will be able to pitch music on the spot and receive instant feedback as to whether a song is appropriate or not, and WHY. This valuable feedback makes better pitches – and ultimately, radio air time – possible. Please note: NARIP cannot guarantee that any participants’ music will receive airtime.

Above all, attendees get to meet key players in the modern radio business, paving the way for future opportunities and giving them an edge in a highly competitive market.

At each NARIP Radio Executive Session in Los Angeles, participants will have the opportunity to pitch music and get immediate, direct feedback from one radio executive.

Here is what attendees say about NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions (the same format as the upcoming Radio Executive Sessions) held earlier this year in Los Angeles:

  • “Thank you again for providing one of the more professional and useful events that I have ever attended. It was intimate, precise and well-executed. The feedback was immediate and valuable.” – Eric Caver, PTEC Dojo (attended Andrea von Foerster session)

  • “Another successful and extremely well-organized NARIP event, please keep them coming! … [it was] an amazing opportunity to pitch our music to Gary Calamar in such a personal and focused setting.” – Sven Spieker, Mighty Generation Music (attended Gary Calamar, Andrea von Foerster and Chris Mollere sessions)

  • Very, very informative and helpful. These are fun and the supervisors have been extremely willing to share very useful info. – Catharine Wood, Planetwood Productions (attended Andrea von Foerster, Julianne Jordan and John Houlihan sessions)

  • “I’ve had 3 managers and 5 years of plugging away on the Internet for contacts and had more success getting material in front of a music supervisor with NARIP’s sessions than anything previously! Please keep it up, I will definitely attend more!” – Shay Dillon, Independent

  • “[NARIP’s Music Supervisor series] is a very effective and beneficial program to get contact with the local and national supervisors who run the film and TV industry.” – Robert Case, President, New Pants Publishing (attended Carolyn Richardson, Gary Calamar and Julianne Jordan and sessions)

  • “Last night’s program was awesome, well-organized, inspiring. Chris Mollere was great, with positive yet constructive comments for us all.” – Annie Calder, Coral West Music

ABOUT THE RADIO EXECUTIVES

Julie Pilat, Assistant Program Director / Music Director at KIIS FM and Program Director at KYSR 98-7fm
Session #1 on Wednesday, September 28, 2011

A young Julie Pilat, obsessed with Hip Hop, Pop AND Rock, started her radio career while still in junior high. A Seattle native, she began answering phones at KUBE in 1992, and by the time she hit high school, Julie had her own ON AIR shift at the local college radio stations KGRG and KNHC. As soon as she was able to drive herself to the station, she got her own air shift at KUBE as well. Julie’s college years took her to Arizona (ASU) where she continued to foster her radio career and passion for music at KPWR (Hip Hop) and KEDJ (Alternative Rock) in Phoenix, where she held down air shifts and worked in the programming departments. In 1998, she returned to Seattle and landed the midday air shift and the APD/MD job at KUBE. Four years later, Julie made the move to Los Angeles and was named the APD/MD at legendary Top 40 KIIS FM. The success of KIIS during her tenure there, coupled with an unbridled passion for manic genres made her the stand out choice to take over the helm at Clear Channel’s KYSR when the format switched to Alternative Rock in January of 2009. Today, Julie continues to hold both positions in the Clear Channel LA Radio Cluster (APD/MD at KIIS FM and PD at KYSR 98-7fm). In her “spare” time, Julie is a dedicated mentor and community leader. She donates time and resources to A Place Called Home in South Central and to the Youth Mentoring Connection. She is also passionate about discovering new music, mentoring new artists, and being creative with how radio can support the artist development process in the ever-changing music business.

Julie’s Awards, Honors and Acknowledgements include:

  • R&R’s Top 40 Music Director of the Year for several years.
  • Youth Mentoring Connection “Mentoring Hall of Fame” 2007
  • FMQB CHR Music Director of the Year 2009
  • Radio Ink’s Top 50 Most Influential Women in Radio 2010 and 2011
  • S.I.N. Network’s Music Director of the Year for several years
  • Billboard’s Twitter 140: Music Industry Characters You Need To Follow

2012-06-12 In LA – NARIP Presents Film Makers Who Seek Music
×

NARIP Presents

Film Makers Who Seek Music

on Tuesday, June 12, 2012

at SAE Institute of Technology in Los Angeles

Placing music in film and TV is competitive, and any advantage is a plus.

Give yourself the advantage of meeting directors face-to-face who need music (songs and score) for their film projects.

NARIP has long been a proponent of “meet the talent early” – whether artistic or executive talent – to get in at the ground floor. An excellent example of this is film maker Steven Spielberg and composer / conductor / pianist John Williams. Between the two of them, Spielberg and Williams have won more awards than you can count. Williams has composed some of the most recognizable film scores in the history of motion pictures (Star Wars, Jaws, Superman, the Indiana Jones films, E.T. the Estra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List and the first three Harry Potter films), and has composed music for all but two of Spielberg’s major feature films. Their collaboration dates back to when they were both unknown and just starting out. They recognized each other’s talents earl, worked well together and voila! Together they have made and scored some of the biggest blockbusters in the world.

These are the kinds of professional relationships NARIP seeks to enable with our programs and activities. So come get to know the buyers – the film makers themselves – and let them get to know you, your catalog and the artists you represent!

At this program we will discuss what the film makers seek and how to market music to make it more attractive to them. Different deal types will also be discussed for licensing music in film.

You will receive copies of important documents, learn how to close and “paper” these deals and keep music buyers coming back for more.

Meet the buyers and get educated about the art of music placement in film!

You will learn:

  • Making the pitch: necessary elements
  • What music buyers such as film directors really look for
  • How to increase the impact and marketability of music
Also:

  • What to do before seeking a placement
  • You’ve made a placement, now what?
  • Important deal points and legal documents required
  • Explanation of standard deal points
  • Budgets and fee ranges
  • Types of deals
  • Types of music uses
  • Things to avoid
  • Negotiation
  • Hiring a lawyer: pros and cons
  • Closing the deal
  • Typical flow of earnings from a film, TV, trailer or ad placement
  • How to get paid
Sample license agreement, quote sheet and cue sheet will be distributed at event.

Don’t miss this insider’s peek at the music placement realities of the fastest-changing business in the world. Most importantly, this program gives you practical information you can apply immediately to work with music buyers and land placements NOW.

THANK YOU

Special thanks for her help with this program to Jessica Ramos at SAE Institute.

All are welcome. You need not be a NARIP member to attend.
