Mock Negotiation of a Producer Deal

Part of NARIP’s Art of the Music Deal Series:
What Happens Before You $ign on the Dotted Line?

on Thursday, August 18, 2011

at St. John’s University in New York, NY

Top professionals wrangle a career-making music producer deal.

Most people think they can just hand a negotiation to a lawyer, and leave it at that. But as a professional, you need to be aware of the process and deal points, too, and what the short- and long-term implications to your artists’ careers may be.

In this session, two top experts face off in a live negotiation of a producer agreement in NARIP’s Art of the Music Deal. These experts come together to give you the inside track on major deal points, what they mean and what leverage you have to negotiate the best possible deal.

Most importantly, you will see HOW a producer deal is negotiated and be involved in the process.

Get educated about the art of deal making!

Special thanks to John Martin, Joseph R. Gagliano, Jr. and Ally Colvin for their help with this program.

YOU WILL LEARN

The right time to make a deal.

Major areas of negotiation, including:

  • Producer advance vs. recording fund. Did you know it all comes out of the artist’s recording fund?
  • Producer royalty. Did you know it all comes out of the artist’s royalty?
  • Recoupment
  • Terms & Options
  • Controlled Composition Clause: what you need to know if your producer is also your co-writer!
  • What does the artist’s recording agreement say?? THIS affects the producer’s royalty, royalty accountings, mechanical royalties, CD reductions, “fake” free goods and much more!

Mock Negotiation of a Music Publishing Deal

Part of NARIP’s Art of the Music Deal Series:
What Happens Before You $ign on the Dotted Line?

on Thursday, October 20, 2011

at St. John’s University in New York, NY

In this latest installment of NARIP’s “Art of the Music Deal” series, two top experts face off in a live negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues in a publishing deal that affect a songwriter’s rights and income.

These experts come together to give you the inside track on major deal points, what they mean and what leverage you have to negotiate the best possible deal.

Most people think they can just hand a negotiation to a lawyer, and leave it at that. But as a professional, you need to be aware of the process and deal points, too, and what the short- and long-term implications to your artists’ careers may be.

NARIP’s series de-mystifies deal-making and enables the lawyer and non-lawyer alike to come away with a clear grasp of the most important deal points and leverage available. Infinitely better than merely READING about it, see the deal duked out and DONE right before your eyes.

Most importantly, you will see HOW a publishing deal is negotiated and be involved in the process.

Get educated about the art of deal-making!

Lawyers and non-lawyers are welcome. Sample music publishing deal will be provided.

You will learn major areas of negotiation for publishing deals including:

  • Songwriter development
  • Advances

She also implemented the use of the Right Track System as their main royalty system for the publishing. Prior to Tommy Boy Michelle was the Manager of Tracking at EMI Music Publishing. She was a liaison between the Copyright, Royalties and International Departments. During her early days in the music industry, Michelle worked with the legendary John Hammond (who discovered Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Ray Vaughan among others) in A&R; with CBS Records in A/C Promotions; and at ASCAP in the membership department, learning the workings of a U.S. Performance Society. Finally, her experience as an Assistant Engineer at Media Sound Recording and face-to-face with the consumer at retail managing a Record Town chain store, has given Michelle an extremely well-rounded education about the ins and outs of the music business. She has a BA in Management of Music Enterprises and continuing passion for music and entertainment.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Hayley Cammarata, Digital/Strategic Marketing and Product Manager at Decca Label Group/Universal Music Group

Hayley Cammarata, Digital and Strategic Marketing/Product Manager Hayley Cammarata came on board at Decca Label Group, a division of Universal Music Group, in 2007 and developed the Digital Marketing Department from the ground up. As a Digital and Strategic Marketing Manager, some of her responsibilities include managing all DLG artist Web sites and label sites including social networking platforms, developing and maintaining strategic partners and branding relationships for the label and artists as well as managing the department. After developing the department to what it is today, all releases have strong online visibility including mainstream real estate within sites like AOL and Yahoo as well as partnerships with less traditional entertainment sites. On top of all of her duties on the digital side, Hayley also serves as a product manager to some of the label’s new developing artists including indie darling Ladyhawke. The diverse roster at Decca is home to such artists as Andrea Bocelli, Sting, Boyz II Men, David Sanborn, Dee Dee Bridgewater, David Garrett and newcomers Debi Nova and Nikki Yanofsky. Prior to her work at Decca, Cammarata honed her Internet marketing skills at labels such as SonyBMG, Warner/Elektra/Atlantic and completed an internship at ATO Records.

David Chaitt, Manager of Social Distribution at Oddcast, SoundCtrl blogger and freelance social media strategist

So I’m a quarter century old. I live in Brooklyn. Music has been the one of the only things I’ve been passionate about. The pursuit of new music is a reason to wake up in the morning and trying to expose that music is why I can’t sleep at night. When I graduated college, I flirted with the idea of law school, but I soon came to the realization that I wanted to be a part of the music industry in whatever capacity I could. I got an internship with Ropeadope and my life has been constructive chaos ever since. I have dipped my hands in most aspects of music: marketing, booking, promoting, stage management, tour management, journalism, and A&R. I take pride in my ability to learn by doing and am always on the watch to be as educated and informed as I can be about the music business as well as upcoming bands. Currently, I’m the Manager of Social Distribution at Oddcast. After the day job ends, I spend my time on SoundCtrl, a music tech organization based out of NYC, where I’m the blog editor and board member. I’m a being-productive junky so when I’m not working, I’m cooking, exercising, homebrewing beer, reading, writing or catching up on the few TV shows that have any substance these days.

Eric de Fontenay, Publisher / Editor, MusicDish LLC

Eric de Fontenay has spent his career steeped in what has been called the “digital revolution”. In the 90s, he worked on a variety of policy issues surrounding the communication & broadband sectors for telecommunication carriers and regulators across the world. With the emergence of the Internet, Eric established MusicDish (formerly Tag It) in 1997 as a new media firm using emerging technologies and models to produce, package and distribute original web-based content. Making an early bet on the music sector, Eric launched what has grown into some of the leading voices in the growing debates challenging and shaping the industry through its trade e-publications MusicDish and Mi2N. Under his leadership, MusicDish expanded into artist development through saturated marketing and online branding, using innovative strategies such as syndicated and relationship marketing, online street teams and p2p viral distribution. Eric continues to be a frequent speaker at conferences worldwide and today manages Toronto-based ‘kaiso’ band Kobo Town.

Steve Gordon, Esq.

Steve Gordon is an entertainment attorney and consultant based in New York City specializing in the production, distribution and financing of music, television, documentaries, feature films, and digital entertainment projects. He also operates a music clearance service for producers, filmmakers, and labels for use of music in feature films, documentaries, concert programs, DVDs, audio compilations and ringtones. He is author of the book titled “The Future of the Music Business: How to Succeed with the New Technologies, A Guide for Artists and Entrepreneurs.” (Hal Leonard 2008.) Steve’s clients include artists, independent music and TV producers, digital entertainment entrepreneurs as well as major labels and multinational entertainment corporations. Steve won a Fulbright Scholarship to lecture on entertainment and copyright law and was a visiting scholar at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy in fall 2007. You can tune into MyRealBroadcast.com to listen to his Internet radio show on the music business. Steve has also served as an Adjunct Professor at the New School, an Instructor at CUNY Graduate Center and recently moderated seminars at Columbia Law School, the Wharton Business School, and was a speaker at entertainment conferences in Denmark, Belgium, Bahamas and South Korea. From 1991 to 2001 Steve served as an attorney and Director of Business Affairs at Sony Music (TV/Video). Prior to Sony, Steve worked at Dino Di Laurentiis, a movie studio in Hollywood, and a music publishing company, SESAC, in New York. Steve is a graduate of New York University School of Law and a member of the NYC Bar Association.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Arne Lucas, Consultant, Illiance Creative Group

Formerly the Director of Mobile Marketing at INgrooves, Arne has spent over half his life in the music industry. His first experience was in the early ‘90s as an artist with the San Francisco-based Soul / R&B vocal group IF. During this time he realized he felt more comfortable behind the scenes, and went on to perfect his skills as a recording engineer. By the mid ‘90s he was chief recording engineer for a full service recording studio located in San Francisco’s Mission District and was working as an executive assistant to the President of a local Bay Area label – Classified Records – which was picked up by Tommy Boy in the late ‘90s.

At the time, the Bay Area music scene was thriving but Arne felt that there was more to accomplish. By now he excelled at the label, getting his hands into everything from A&R duties, to engineering, physical retail distribution and licensing. He was soon hired on full time and thrived at the label. Arne took to the business of music, expanding his knowledge of publishing, licensing and contract negotiations. He moved on to assist in a new music venture for the New York City start-up A Media, which focused on the Asian American entertainment industry.

He was then approached a few years later by his mentor at Classified to take on a Music Supervisor position for 360 Media Group. 360 Media’s flagship product was a DVD series called 360 Video Magazine, a quarterly video magazine that specialized in the import car scene, extreme sports, music and entertainment. Its first mainstream release “Hard Drive” was certified gold and distributed at major retail chains such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Target as well as hundreds of smaller retail stores worldwide. After a number of years and over 20 releases under his belt at 360, the DVD market was on a decline so Arne moved into a new career.

In 2003, he accepted a Product Manager position with Hudson Entertainment Inc. who had just acquired the license to The Source Magazine. This was his first experience in the wireless entertainment industry and he hasn’t looked back since. He was integral to bringing what many say was the “Bible of Hip Hop” for over 20 years – The Source Magazine – to mobile. The Source Mobile Channel was one of the only ringtone applications on deck that strictly distributed Hip-Hop/Urban ringtones – this was during the lucrative “polyphonic” era of the ringtone and well before carrier white label mastertone stores such as the ones currently available on Verizon, Sprint, AT&T etc. He eventually moved to a more video game-centric position in mobile as an Account Manager with Namco Networks – working directly with carriers to launch the classic game catalog for mobile from the legendary video game giant. It was here where he learned the intricacies of the carrier world. After close to 2 years peddling mobile video games he decided to get back into the music business at INgrooves where he served as Director of Mobile Marketing for 4 years, overseeing the mobile business for the digital label.

Raj Singh, Mobile Consulting / Strategy / Product Planning / Definition Expert

Kahlil Najar, Mobile Manager, INgrooves Fontana

Currently the Mobile Manager for INgrooves Fontana, Kahlil Najar started his career in music the old fashioned way by working at an independent retail record store. While there he dove head first into the music industry by obtaining an internship at Universal Music, a part time job at KARA in San Jose, working at KMEL as a street team member, volunteering at Classified Records all the while attending Cal State Hayward where he received his degree in Business Management with an emphasis on Marketing Management. After working the front lines of retail, Kahlil landed a job at KOCH Records (now E1 Entertainment) as a Field Marketing Representative which eventually transformed into a physical sales position. He serviced all the major accounts as well as some key independent retailers and was one of only two representatives to service the entire Bay Area. After he saw the decline of the physical market, Kahlil changed career paths and moved into an Artist Relations representative position at music merchandise heavyweights, Cinder Block. Kahlil’s responsibilities included signing bands to new merchandise contracts and placing orders for artists that performed worldwide. He was the account lead for a range of bands like the Silversun Pickups, H20, 30 Seconds To Mars and Death By Stereo. Seeing that music was still adapting to different ways to sell music, Kahlil joined the team over at Tribal Brands, the music agency of choice for Verizon Wireless. Starting with clearing artwork for print advertising, Kahlil eventually transferred into the Music Team and helped facilitate the programming of the Verizon VCast Music handset as well as the VCASTMUSIC with Rhapsody online application. He was also an integral part of the team which helped Verizon Wireless decide on who Verizon should team with for tour sponsorships, licensing/synch opportunities, online promotions and in-store activations. After a downturn in the economy, Kahlil planted himself at skyrockit where he was the lead programmer for Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile. He helped launch Boost Mobile’s Music related Twitter contests as well as securing artists for Virgin Mobiles First Dibs program. Starting in late April 2012, Kahlil joined INgrooves Fontana as the Mobile Manager in charge of securing mobile promotions for all of INgrooves Fontana’s labels.

Their single “Cult of Personality” is a classic. After Living Colour broke up Roger continued to manage artists including Wayne Shorter, Ween, Soul Coughing, Lisa Loeb, The The and Citizen Cope. 2010-11-15 In NY – Bands, Brands & Beyond Expo
×
NARIP Presents
Bands, Brands & Beyond Expo

Connecting Consumers With Brands
Through The Emotional Power of Music

on Monday, November 15, 2010
at Cardozo Law School in New York, NY

Our Los Angeles Expo on this topic was sold out. Now we bring our full-day expo on this exciting topic to New York!

Using music to boost advertising and marketing can have enormous positive results for both brands and bands. In fact, matching bands (or music) with brands is one of the hottest and fastest growing areas of the business today.

Once taboo, brand associations and advertising are embraced by today’s savvy recording artists and their reps to increase exposure to their music and advance their careers. The Black Eyed Peas, for example, have been called “the most corporate band in America” (Wall Street Journal, April 16, 2010). Learn how will.i.am and the band became the face of Samsung, BlackBerry, Bacardi, Apple and Target.

Increasingly, advertising, brand and marketing executives need to know how to create win-win deals.

NARIP Presents “Bands, Brands & Beyond” Expo

That’s why NARIP has assembled some of the music, brand and advertising world’s top executives and deal architects to discuss how to pair music and artists with brands. These experts will guide attendees through the opportunities available and the complex rights area. They will provide insight into how to use brand association for new and established acts, how to create win-win deals and give a glimpse into what the future of music-in-advertising may hold.

How can artists and their reps access billion dollar brands? How can brands access appropriate talent? NARIP’s Expo will focus on how these deals are done, who does them, how they work and what they cost.

Deals done right and deals gone wrong will be examined in detail with case studies, checklists and proven templates. Attendees will receive information to identify and secure the right match.

Don’t miss this opportunity to meet top brand, ad and record executives, as well as artist reps who can help take your campaign to the next level.

You will learn:

  • How to “A&R” a brand and connect consumers to brands through the emotional power of music

  • Case studies, Coca-Cola with K’naan and World Cup 2010, and more

  • Selling in, not selling out: what deals make dollars and sense

  • How to prepare a brief and package ideas to attract and secure a brand

  • How to identify and secure an artist

  • How artists can add value to an ad campaign

  • Deal points: money, splits, fee ranges, negotiation tactics

  • Rights and licensing issues

  • Who puts these deals together, and how? Top deal-makers speak out

  • When art meets commerce: accommodations artists and brands must make

  • Alternatives to 360 deals

Some benefits you will receive:

  • Direct access to more than 100 music, marketing and brand execs from over 30 top music companies and ad agencies

  • Demystify deal-making in the music business – learn which rights you need to proceed

  • Take home a rule book for success, including case studies, checklists, deal points, do’s and don’t’s to create successful promotions and marketing campaigns with music

  • Take home a list of the best music-brand integration companies

  • Hear CEO and senior management perspectives and world-class music-brand strategies

  • Get a sneak preview of the range of music properties available and see what’s in development

  • Form alliances with industry reps of established and developing artists to forge partnerships for your brand

  • Connect with specialists who set music strategy for brands and design big creative concepts

  • Form key relationships and expand your record industry Rolodex

Tena Clark, CEO & Chief Creative Officer of DMI Music Media Solutions; Composer/Lyricist

What musical touchstone does President Barack Obama, the most powerful ruler in the world, share with Aretha Franklin, crowned the greatest singer of the rock era by Rolling Stone Magazine? The answer is the music expertise of Tena Clark. The company she founded, DMI Music & Media Solutions, programs the President’s music for Air Force One, and Clark also recently produced the Queen of Soul’s most recent album. Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Jennifer Holliday, Gladys Knight, CeCe Winans, Dionne Warwick, Patti Austin, Stephanie Mills, Yolanda Adams and Rev. Shirley Caesar are among the iconic recording artists for whom Clark has written and/or produced. In 2009, Natalie Cole was honored with two GRAMMY awards for Still Unforgettable, executive-produced by Clark. A musical compass has guided Clark from rural Mississippi to Hollywood. Beginning at age five, she would visit New Orleans with her mother, a songwriter from the big band era, where she absorbed the city’s intoxicating rhythms. Her first professional gig at 15 was playing drums at the Crescent City’s famed Roosevelt Hotel. Since then, Clark has excelled in multiple genres across an breadth of mediums. Highlights include penning award-winning country hits, contributing to multi-platinum movie soundtracks including Hope Floats, The Five Heart Beats, Where the Heart Is, and My Best Friend’s Wedding, writing for television shows like Desperate Housewives, and creating the instantly recognizable national campaign theme, “Have You Had Your Break Today,” for McDonald’s. In homage to her musical and spiritual roots, Clark produced Church: Songs of Soul and Inspiration that included classic soul artists like Patti LaBelle and Chaka Khan plus contributions from Pulitzer Prize winner, Dr. Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison. A stratospheric anthem from this collection, “Way Up There,” written and produced by Clark and performed by Patti LaBelle, was nominated for a GRAMMY award. “Way Up There” was originally commissioned by NASA as their theme song. Clark, a preeminent songwriter, is one of the rare female producers in the music business, and is among the most influential women in American media. Recently, Clark was named “Entrepreneur of the Year” by the Committee of 200, a prestigious group of the highest ranking women executives in successful private and public companies. Also, Clark recently launched “Twist, An American Musical” to rave reviews in Atlanta; Clark is the composer and lyricist. “Twist” was directed and choreographed by Debbie Allen. As CEO/Chief Creative Officer for the industry leader DMI Music & Media Solutions, the company she envisioned 13 years ago, she is involved with every imaginative aspect of the forward-thinking firm’s endeavors. ART OF THE MUSIC DEAL:
What Happens Before You $ign on the Dotted Line?

360 Record Deal Mock Negotiation

on Thursday, April 19, 2012 in New York

With major changes in recording agreements in recent years, multiple rights or so-called “360 deals” have become more common. In this latest installment of NARIP’s “Art of the Music Deal” series, two attorneys and one artist manager explain what these deals encompass. They will then face off in a live mock negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues that affect an artist’s rights and income, and a record company’s ability to acquire and monetize additional rights.

Most importantly, you will see HOW a 360 deal is negotiated and be involved in the process.

Get educated about the art of deal-making!

Attorneys and non-attorneys are welcome.
You need not be a NARIP member to attend.

This NARIP program will cover
multiple rights and 360 deals:
What are they?

Topics:

  • How to minimize or maximize a record company’s involvement in additional rights
  • How to obligate a record company to monetize additional rights and maximize returns from a 360 deal
  • Important deal points including new 360 provisions, ancillary rights, digital royalties, royalty rates for mobile, digital downloads, and interactive streaming services.
  • The right time to make a deal
  • 360 deals for developing artists
Also to be addressed:

  • Rights and revenue streams typically included in 360 deals (recording, publishing, merch, touring, sponsorships, endorsements)
  • What parties enter into multiple rights deals? (such as labels, publishers, personal artist management companies)
  • What is the nature of the label’s (or other party’s) participation in each of the various revenue streams, active or passive?
  • Calculation of artist’s share (e.g., are revenue streams and costs cross-collateralized? If so, how?)
  • New business models such as LLC-type deals and others
  • Advances, recording funds, tour support, marketing and promotion commitments
WHO SHOULD ATTEND

2018-06-05 In New York – NARIP Synch Agent Pitch Session -w- Steve Scharf (Lucifer, Shameless, NCIS, Bloodline, E3)
×

Scharf-5-UP

Harness the Power of an Independent Commissioned Sales and Marketing Agent to Exploit and Monetize Your Music!

A NARIP Series: Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Synch Agents

Is your music getting to decision-makers –  people who can say YES and write a check?

The Synch Agents* featured in NARIP Pitch Sessions are among the top sales and marketing executives who actively place music owned by songwriters, composers and independent music publishers.

Many music buyers – directors, producers and music supervisors – name these Synch Agents as among their go-to music providers.  These Agents, who NARIP has researched and interviewed,  have placed thousands of songs in blockbuster films, hit television shows, trailers, global promotion and advertising campaigns, and video games.

At NARIP’s intimate sessions, you get to meet and pitch Synch Agents for current placement opportunities and representation, and get immediate feedback.

Come meet these career-makers.

BACKGROUND

Since 2011, NARIP Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions have secured over 1,000 placements in blockbuster films, hit television series, global promotion and advertising campaigns, and trailers for NARIP members.

NARIP members have also secured publishing deals and formed creative collaborations too numerous to mention as a direct result of these NARIP’s Sessions.

Topics

  • Access multiple potential buyer placemente
  • Trends in synch licensing and agent deals
  • Exclusive, non-exclusive, single-song deals
  • Budgets and fee ranges
  • Royalties, copyright ownership, rights retention
  • Fees and deal points between synch agents and their clients
  • Which synch agents seek a transfer of copyright(s) for their services, and under what circumstances
  • Song re-titling

Small, focused NARIP Sessions enable one-on-one time and immediate direct feedback to music presented by participants.  At hundreds of NARIP Sessions, we asked every guest music supervisor how to better market music to them.  Their one consistent piece of advice?  Get representation!

At NARIP Synch Agent Pitch Sessions, limited to 16 people, you get to know the synch agents and they to get to know you.

Most important, attendees meet these key players, paving the way for possible representation and ongoing opportunities, and giving them an edge in a competitive market.

* Synch Agent: A synchronization or “synch” agent represents music copyrights – either the composition, the sound recordings, or both.  They pitch music to buyers and their representatives, including to music supervisors.  Synch agents are typically compensated on a commission basis and do not own or control the copyrights they represent.  While synch agents usually focus on entertainment and media exploitations, traditional songplugger services also include placement of represented songs with recording artists.

What is a Synch Agent (and WHY you need one)?  View video (:60 seconds)

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NARIP SYNCH AGENT PITCH SESSION:

PREPARATION IS KEY

As with NARIP Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions, NARIP’s Synch Agent Pitch Sessions are limited to an enrollment of just 16 people.  About one week prior to NARIP’s Session, all registrants will get a brief of the guest’s then-CURRENT music needs. Each registrant will have a chance to pitch in response to the music briefs provided and get immediate feedback to music pitched. Each participant must submit 7 songs (MP3s only please) 36 hours prior to NARIP’s Synch Agent Pitch Session. Please note that due to time constraints you will only be able to pitch your TOP 3 songs for consideration and immediate feedback (more, if time permits). This process takes the mystery out of why a piece of music does or doesn’t fit. On-the-spot feedback enables registrants to re-work tracks and re-submit, which creates a much higher probability to get them licensed (choose well!).

If you do not have music that matches the current needs of the guest, fear not! You can still attend and present the top three songs in your catalog.  Make sure the songs are unique and captivating. This is helpful because a music supervisor’s needs change constantly. To optimize impact of music you pitch at NARIP’s Synch Agent Session, we highly recommend that you target the briefs.

In addition to pitching for current placement opportunities, NARIP’s guest Synch Agents will consider music pitched for representation.

Good luck and see you there!

BEFORE NARIP’S SYNCH AGENT PITCH SESSION:
  • NARIP prepares a one-sheet for each participant including your photo and bio for the guest to use and review at the event, and to take with him after the event.  We will request your photo and bio one week prior to the event.  In preparing these materials, we recommend you focus on brief career highlights in your bio and have a professional photo available.
  • Approximately 5 to 7 days prior to NARIP’s Session, you will be sent a project brief describing several cues needed for a current project(s) of our guest speaker.  These often include reference songs or links so that you can hear exactly what he seeks or needs to replace.
  • You will submit your tracks with writer, publisher and other rights holder information that will also be supplied to the music supervisor during and after NARIP’s Session.
  • You will get submission and meta-tagging guidelines, and mentoring as to how best to prepare your music for submission.

DURING NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:

  • You will get to play at least three songs (sometimes more, if time permits) for the guest music supervisor who will provide feedback to you for each one.
  • NARIP moderator asks very specific questions to help participants learn and understand how to modify their tracks to make these more place-able for the guest supervisor’s specific needs at hand.

AFTER NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:

  • NARIP provides guest music supervisor with participant one-sheets and all music from NARIP’s Session, including notes detailing the guest music supervisor’s interest in specific tracks.
  • If requested by guest music supervisor, NARIP conveys additional tracks, remixes, instrumentals etc. to him.
  • If approved by guest music supervisor, NARIP provides his contact details to registrants.
DON’T GET LOST IN THE CROWD: SMALL IS THE NEW BIG NARIP Sessions are deliberately kept small and intimate, which is just one reason they work so well and why participants have enjoyed over 1,000 placements to date. Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees that registrants meet and get face-time with our guest. OVER 1,000 PLACEMENTS FROM NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS
Our small format works! NARIP Session participants have placed over 1,000 tracks as a direct result of NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions.  Other benefits include new publishing deals for NARIP members, creative collaborations and co-writes, strategic introductions to other music supervisors and placement experts, new representation for composers and much more. NARIP’S BIGGEST PLACEMENT TO DATE : VODAFONE Click here to read about NARIP’s biggest placement to date in a Vodafone campaign (Oct 2014) that paid handsomely and launched a career.  Other brand placements include McDonalds and AT&T ads, among others. Placements secured and professional relationships formed through NARIPs music supervisor sessions have earned praise and many placements! See TESTIMONIALS and PLACEMENTS sections below.

ABOUT STEVEN SCHARF

Scharf-Steve Steven Scharf Entertainment was formed in 1991 to manage and develop the careers of independent record producers and recording artists. At that time, Steven aligned himself in a joint partnership with Freddy and Caroline Bienstock of Carlin America, Inc. – one of the most prestigious independent music publishers in the world where he served as Senior V.P. Creative for Carlin America, overseeing the licensing of well established songwriters and artists such as AC/DC, Jim Steinman (Meat Loaf), The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Turtles, James Brown, Bobby Darin, and Billie Holiday.  Prior to the creation of Steven Scharf Entertainment, Steven Scharf spent nearly  30 years working in the recording industry as a record producer, head of A&R, and talent manager. His career began in 1969, when he was privileged to apprentice at the famed Muscle Shoals studio in Sheffield. Alabama. While there he worked with legendary artists as The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Boz Scaggs, Lynyrd Skynyrd, R.B. Greaves, and with such producers and engineers as Ahmet Ertegun, Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd and Steve Smith.   As his career progressed, Steve moved on to work at GSF Records in the early 70’s and held a staff editorial position at Cashbox Magazine.  In 1976 Larry Uttal tapped him to become Head of A&R at Private Stock Records, where he oversaw A&R for such artists as The Mighty Pope, Blondie, Robert Gordon & Link Wray, Benny Mardones, Rupert Holmes, The Dirty Angels and Samantha Sang.  Steve produced many artists during the late 70’s, early 80’s such as Robin Lane and the Chartbusters, Bob Halligan and Duke Jupiter (Motown). In recent years Steven Scharf Entertainment has become an LLC, and evolved to include the film and television licensing of many new independent artists. Following the trend of major television shows which prefer “one-stop shopping”, Steven began representing a diverse range of artists who control their own publishing and masters. This approach created an advantage with music supervisors who require music on short deadlines; removing the need to negotiate at length with publishing companies and record labels.  TESTIMONIALS
