Most people think they can just hand a negotiation to a lawyer, and leave it at that. But the truth is, as a professional, you need to be aware of the process and deal points, too, and what the short- and long-term implications to your artists’ careers may be.

Now, of this latest installment of our special series, two top lawyers face off in a live negotiation of a producer agreement in NARIP’s Art of the Music Deal. NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions

Intimate Meeting & Pitch Session with Top Music Supervisors

DETAILS

Music supervisor Paul Logan is our special guest at NARIP’s next Music Supervisor Session in Paris. Logan commissions, licenses and places music for hit television programs (Single Ladies movie and series, Basketball Wives, Couples Therapy, Black Ink Crew and others).

We are particularly excited to bring Paul Logan to Paris because to date he has placed 13 tracks from NARIP Session participants, and he is on the hunt for great new music for this season’s show. He licenses a great deal of material because his shows are all very music-centric. This means more placement opportunities for participants.

ABOUT PAUL LOGAN

He is a Creative Music Integration Manager at VH1, implementing featured music placements for a wide range of programming. Current projects include Hit The Floor, Couples Therapy, and Black Ink Crew. Other credits include the Single Ladies movie and series, Basketball Wives LA, Chrissy & Mr. Jones, Styled By June, Baseball Wives, Beverly Hills Fabulous, Audrina, and others. Paul’s previous experience includes Music & Talent Relations at MTV and Music Marketing at VH1.

Come meet this career-maker!

ALMOST 100 PLACEMENTS FROM NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS

Our small format works! NARIP Session Participants have placed almost 100 tracks as a direct result of NARIP Sessions, most recently in a trailer for the Warner Bros. film Grudge Match starring Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone.

NARIP Sessions are deliberately kept small, which is why they work so well and why participants have enjoyed almost 100 placements. Enrollment at this Session is limited to 16 people who wish to pitch. Tess Taylor, NARIP President (moderator)

Tess Taylor is president of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals (NARIP), the biggest music business network in the world. She is creator of NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions, which feature music supervisors from the film, TV, games and ad agency sectors and have yielded over 30 music placements (in the #1 box office film Chronicle, True Blood, Dexter, Don’t Trust The B—- in Apt. #23, Bad Girls Club, Jane By Design, on ESPN as NASCAR Racing theme music for an entire season, in the star-studded Movie 43, in the Sony Pictures Classics At Any Price starring Zac Efron and Dennis Quaid, in several documentaries including the title track of the film Finding Our Voice, and in other projects). NARIP’s sessions have sold out repeatedly in Los Angeles, New York, Berlin and London. One of the nation’s leading authorities on careers in the music and record industries, Ms. Taylor has connected countless people to jobs and opportunities through her work in the US and abroad, cultivated collaborations for over two decades, helped launch hundreds of projects and several companies. If you’ve read Malcolm Gladwell’s book “The Tipping Point” then you may recognize her as a “super-connector.” Says Hollywood Today Publisher & Editor Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn, “Tess Taylor is one of the great resources of the music business. She’s a walking job fair. She has amazing insights into where the business is going and combines that savvy with a Rolodex the size of an SUV.” Music Connection magazine named Ms. Taylor in its list of “50 Innovators, Iconoclasts, Groundbreakers & Guiding Lights of 2008” (Dec 2008). Dubbed “International Music Ambassador” by music supervisor P.J. Bloom (Glee, Nip/Tuck, The Shield, CSI: Miami), Ms. Taylor works with groups such as the European Music Export Office, Danish Songwriters Guild, French Music Export Office, Boomtown (Sweden) and Berlin Music Commission to connect their members to opportunities in LA and throughout the U.S. She has consulted leading businesses such as InsideSessions (a joint venture between the Universal Music Group and Penguin Putnam, Inc.), The Walt Disney Company, BMG Entertainment (formerly Sony BMG), Concord Records and MySpace.com in its start-up phase. Recent keynotes include Popkomm (Berlin), the Drucker Career Conference (Los Angeles), the Trigger Creative Conference (Sweden), the University of Vienna’s Institute für Popularmusik in Austria, NAMM 2011 (Los Angeles), the California Music Industry Summit, Berlin Music Week and others. Deeply annoyed by people who think music should be free, Ms. Taylor is a vigorous defender of intellectual property rights and debated Electronic Frontier Foundation co-founder John Perry Barlow on “free music” at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (2006) and was invited for a rematch at Ohio University (2008). She won both times. She has lectured at institutions across the nation and around the world ranging from the Harvard Business School to local colleges and universities. From 1988 to 1993 Ms. Taylor was employed at MCA Records, Inc., last serving as Associate Director of Marketing. A classically trained pianist, she studied music at the University of Vienna, and is a Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Redlands’ Johnston College where she received her BA degree in music, German and literature. She loves traveling the world, nibbling dark chocolates and drinks lots of tea. She also loves fine fountain pens, anything written or recorded by Glenn Gould or Pete Townshend, gripping crime novels and hiking with her handsome and purposeful English cocker spaniel (NARIP’s Executive Dog) Haribo. ABOUT ARTISANS LABEL

What if you had a full-time support system for your music? That’s the question being answered right now by Orange County’s ArtiSans Label. On the same hallowed ground in Fullerton, CA where Fender guitars were born, ArtiSans Label began in 2008 as a recording and record label services company. Over 300 albums, 59 Orange County Music Awards nominations, and 25,494 cups of coffee later, the company has evolved into a progressive new industry offering: coworking for musicians. ArtiSans Label provides the production facility, office space, education, opportunities, and label services for a select group of local recording artists and supporting industry pros. Members exchange advice, discuss ideas, collaborate, create, record, promote, and support each other, organically, as they recognize the power of “better together”. It’s a new model with an unprecedented level of attention and support for artists without a label.

Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Music Supervisors

1000+ Placements and 19 Signings Result From NARIP Pitch Sessions

Read more here

A NARIP Series: Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Music Buyers including Music Supervisors, A&R Executives, Synch Agents & Music Producers

Is your music getting to decision-makers –  people who can say YES and write a check? At NARIP’s intimate sessions, you get to meet music buyers including A&R executives, music supervisors, synch agents and music producers and pitch for current placement opportunities, representation, and projects, and get immediate feedback. BACKGROUND Since 2011, NARIP Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions have secured over 1,000 placements in blockbuster films, hit television series, global promotion and advertising campaigns, and major studio trailers for NARIP members.   Since inception of NARIP’s Synch Agent Pitch Sessions in 2018, 17 NARIP members have signed representation or music publishing deals as a direct result.  Other outcomes include collaborations, co-writing, producing and commissioned work. Topics at NARIP’s Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions:
  • Meet top film & TV music supervisor face-to-face
  • Pitch songs directly to Joe for his priority & upcoming projects
  • Meet Joe who can say YES and write you a check.
  • Joe is a repeat NARIP guest and has worked with – licensed music from – NARIP members.
  • Learn how to get placed direcetly from the buyer, hear what works and what doesn’t
  • Direct access + firsthand info = better results FOR YOU
Small, focused NARIP Sessions enable one-on-one time and immediate direct feedback to music presented by participants.   At NARIP Pitch Sessions, limited to 16 people, you get to know the guest music supervisor, synch agent or producer, and they to get to know you.   Most important, attendees meet these key players, paving the way for placement, representation, collaboration and ongoing opportunities, and giving them an edge in a competitive market.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR PITCH SESSION PREPARATION IS KEY

NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions are limited to an enrollment of just 16 people.  About one week prior to NARIP’s Session, all registrants will get a brief of the guest supervisor’s then-CURRENT music needs. Each registrant will have a chance to pitch in response to the music briefs provided and get immediate feedback to music pitched. Each participant must submit 7 songs (MP3s only please) 36 hours prior to NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session. Please note that due to time constraints you will only be able to pitch your TOP 3 songs for consideration and immediate feedback (more, if time permits). This process takes the mystery out of why a piece of music does or doesn’t fit. On-the-spot feedback enables registrants to re-work tracks and re-submit, which creates a much higher probability to get them licensed (choose well!).

If you do not have music that matches the current needs of the supervisor, fear not! You can still attend and present the top three songs in your catalog.  Make sure the songs are unique and captivating. This is helpful because a music supervisor’s needs change constantly. To optimize impact of music you pitch at NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session, we highly recommend that you target the briefs. Good luck and see you there!

BEFORE NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:

  • NARIP prepares a one-sheet for each participant including your photo and bio for the guest music supervisor to use and review at the event, and to take with him after the event.  We will request your photo and bio one week prior to the event.  In preparing these materials, we recommend you focus on brief career highlights in your bio and have a professional photo available.
  • Approximately 5 to 7 days prior to NARIP’s Session, you will be sent a project brief describing several cues needed for a current project(s) of our guest speaker.  These often include reference songs or links so that you can hear exactly what he seeks or needs to replace.
  • You will submit your tracks with writer, publisher and other rights holder information that will also be supplied to the music supervisor during and after NARIP’s Session.
  • You will get submission and meta-tagging guidelines, and mentoring as to how best to prepare your music for submission.
DURING NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
  • You will get to play at least three songs (sometimes more, if time permits) for the guest music supervisor who will provide feedback to you for each one.
  • NARIP moderator asks very specific questions to help participants learn and understand how to modify their tracks to make these more place-able for the guest supervisor’s specific needs at hand.
AFTER NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
  • NARIP provides guest music supervisor with participant one-sheets and all music from NARIP’s Session, including notes detailing the guest music supervisor’s interest in specific tracks.
  • If requested by guest music supervisor, NARIP conveys additional tracks, remixes, instrumentals etc. to him.
  • If approved by guest music supervisor, NARIP provides his contact details to registrants.

Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Music Supervisors

1000+ Placements and 19 Signings Result From NARIP Pitch Sessions

  • Meet top music supervisor from major advertising firm face-to-face
  • Meet Dan who can say YES and write you a check
  • Pitch songs directly to him for priority projects, regional and global brand campaigns
