ABOUT THE SPEAKER Tess Taylor One of the nation’s leading authorities on careers in the music and record industries, Ms. Taylor has connected countless people to jobs and opportunities through her work in the US and abroad, cultivated collaborations for over two decades, helped launch hundreds of projects and several companies. If you’ve read Malcolm Gladwell’s best-selling book “The Tipping Point” then you may recognize her as a “super-connector,” the concept Gladwell coined to describe that unusual species of person who knows everybody. Says Hollywood Today Publisher & Editor Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn, “Tess Taylor is one of the great resources of the music business. She’s a walking job fair. She has amazing insights into where the business is going and combines that savvy with a Rolodex the size of an SUV.” These traits are at the core of the two organizations she founded, the Los Angeles Music Network (LAMN, est. 1988) and the National Association of Record Industry Professionals (NARIP, est. 1998). Ms. Taylor oversees initiatives of both organizations to promote career advancement, education and good will in the music and record industries. Headquartered in Los Angeles, NARIP has chapters in New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Houston, Philadelphia and London, with plans to launch more chapters in 2010. Music Connection magazine says LAMN and NARIP are “top-notch and brilliantly executed” and named Ms. Taylor in its list of “50 Innovators, Iconoclasts, Groundbreakers & Guiding Lights of 2008” (Dec 2008). Last year, the World Championships of Performing Arts Board unanimously voted to honor Ms. Taylor with its 2009 Achievement Award and induct her into its Performing Arts Hall of Fame. Dubbed “International Music Ambassador” by music supervisor P.J. Bloom (Nip/Tuck, The Shield, CSI: Miami), Ms. Taylor works with groups such as the European Music Export Office, Danish Songwriters Guild, French Music Export Office, German Independent Label Association, the Brazilian Independent Label Association and others to connect their members to meaningful opportunities in Los Angeles and throughout the U.S. Ms. Taylor has consulted leading businesses such as MySpace.com, InsideSessions (a joint venture between the Universal Music Group and Penguin Putnam, Inc.), The Walt Disney Company, BMG Entertainment (formerly Sony BMG), Concord Records and others. A frequently quoted analyst of industry developments, she has been a featured expert on international television and radio, and her analyses have appeared in national and international business press. Along with workshops and seminars for her clients, she teaches “The Future of the Music Business… and YOUR Future In It,” a course she developed at UCLA, at institutions worldwide. The author of numerous articles and interviews with top record executives, she is at work on a book about the music business. A frequent keynote speaker and guest speaker at industry conferences and universities around the world, Ms. Taylor has lectured at the Harvard Business School, in Bangalore, Berlin and beyond. Later this year she keynotes at the Drucker Career Conference in Los Angeles and Trigger Creative Conference in Sweden, and lectures at the University of Vienna’s Institute of Popular Music in Austria. She has delivered dozens of keynote speeches and hundreds of lectures to thousands of people worldwide. Deeply annoyed by people who think music should be free, Ms. Taylor is a vigorous defender of intellectual property rights and debated Electronic Frontier Foundation co-founder John Perry Barlow on “free music” at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (2006) and was invited for a rematch at Ohio University (2008). She won both times. From 1988 to 1993 Ms. Taylor was employed at MCA Records, Inc., last serving as Associate Director of Marketing. A classically trained pianist, she studied music at the University of Vienna, and is a Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Redlands’ Johnston College where she received her BA degree in music, German and literature. She loves traveling the world, nibbling dark chocolates and drinks lots of tea. She also loves fine fountain pens, anything written or recorded by Glenn Gould or Pete Townshend, gripping crime novels and hiking with her English cocker spaniel. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Sean Beavan Sean Beavan is a musician, record producer, writer, composer and audio engineer best known for his work with Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, God Lives Underwater, and Slayer. His production style is typically heavy, with heavily saturated guitars, but his work is diverse and wide-ranging as exemplified by bands like No Doubt, System of a Down and indie bands like Thrice and 8mm. Beavan started his career as a musician and engineer in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. He played bass and sang in various local bands, and played fret-less bass with Clevelander Eric Carmen (of The Raspberries) on the song “Hungry Eyes” on the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack. While working as an engineer at The Right Track Studio in downtown Cleveland, Beavan met Trent Reznor who worked as the in-house programmer. Reznor also played keyboards in several local bands that Beavan mixed. Reznor asked Beavan to mix the demos of what would eventually become Pretty Hate Machine, which had received multiple offers for record deals. Beavan mixed sound during Nine Inch Nails’ live concerts for many years, eventually becoming an unofficial member of the live band, even singing live backup vocals from his place at the mixing console. Reznor invited him to work on The Downward Spiral as well as mix several songs on Marilyn Manson’s debut record Portrait of an American Family. After contributing to several Nine Inch Nails remix releases (including Closer to God), Beavan mixed and co-produced Marilyn Manson’s Antichrist Superstar. In 1996, after 8 years, Beavan left the Nine Inch Nails camp to mix front-of-house for the “Antichrist Superstar” world tour. In late 1997 Beavan and Manson moved into the Hollywood Hills and started production on Mechanical Animals. Beavan went on to produce and mix records for artists as diverse as Guns N’ Roses, God Lives Underwater, System of a Down, Depeche Mode, No Doubt, Slayer, Kill Hannah, HYDE, P.O.D., Paloalto, Thrice, Unwritten Law, MOTH, Kidneythieves, Tommy Stinson, Tiger Lou, Hypernova, and Chronic Future. He also returned to work with Manson, mixing Eat Me, Drink Me. Beavan is currently involved in his own band with his wife Juliette Beavan, and Drummer Jon Nicholson, called 8mm. 8mm have released 4 discs, “Opener”, “Songs To Love And Die By”, “On A Silent Night” (Christmas EP) and the current “Love And The Apocalypse”, all of which have attracted critical acclaim worldwide. 8mm are one of the most licensed artists in the industry. In addition to recently being featured on national promos for “Nip/Tuck” and Yamaha, their music has been popular with TV and film, including “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Nikita”, “Kings”, “One Tree Hill”, “Shark”, “Cold Case”, “Moonlight”, and the “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” soundtrack, to name a few. Having supported Sean Lennon on the west coast leg of his North American tour the dynamic Trip hop band are currently regulars in the Los Angeles music scene and have toured the US, Great Britain and South America. After producing and mixing Denver Colorado favorites Meese for Atlantic Records, Beavan worked in the studio with Marilyn Manson on “The High End Of Low” with Chris Vrenna and Twiggy Ramirez at Sage and Sound in Hollywood, followed by mixing the album at his home studio, The Blue Room. Last March found Sean Beavan mixing fellow Clevelanders THIS IS A SHAKEDOWN!’s debut record on the newly formed Reversed Image Unlimited record label. Produced by multi-platinum producer Michael Seifert and recorded at Michael’s Ante Up Audio in the heart of downtown Cleveland, Sean mixed the record in their new SSL suite. Beavan followed up by mixing four songs for Japanese-American Sony Records artist Kylee produced by Jeff Turzo of God Lives Underwater fame. Later in the year, he produced and mixed Long Island indy faves Envy on the Coast. Maintaining his reputation for brilliance in diversity, he recently mixed albums for the seminal jazz-metal band The Shining, metal legends Forbidden and sonic master-minds The Kidney Thieves. Steffen Franz aka Stand Out Selector Stand Out Selector, aka Steffen Franz, combines the best of art and business with his eclectic background. With major changes in the modern music industry, independent artists and labels seek new ways to get their music out. Steffen noticed these issues as he himself has faced distribution challenges, too. He launched Independent Distribution Collective in 2004 and since then has grown the company from 9 labels to over 250 labels with close to 300 releases in less than 5 years. In addition to launching a physical distribution company, which now includes both digital, film and DVD distribution, SOS has also developed services like “InstantDistro” a turnkey marketing and promotion service, and “A La Carte Management” which helps advance the independent music community and educate developing artists. A dancehall innovator, a DJ / producer / remixer and the owner of PSM Recordings, he has been bringing his conscious reggae vibes to throngs of people from New York to the Hawaiian Islands (and San Francisco in between) for almost 2 decades. A New York City native, SOS moved to Maui in 1991 where he broke the freshest dancehall tracks to scores of locals as well as tourists from around the globe at Studio 505, a Stephen Stills’ nightclub. At that time he also managed and produced Marty Dread & Culture Shock, the most popular reggae band in the islands. 1993 brought him to San Francisco to play venues like Miss Pearl’s Jam House, Kennel Club and others. Together with former partner Stefan G. (video/multimedia specialist), a brand new concept in global sound systems was formed: Positive Sound Massive. PSM features an array of international vocalists, rappers, toasters and musicians, including rapper Wookie J., whom SOS imported from Maui. In the late 1990s, SOS DJ-ed at hundreds of shows throughout California, Nevada, Washington, New York, Australia and New Zealand where he opened for the Beastie Boys “Hello Nasty” World Tour. He has produced dozens of multi-artist stage shows and the Nicodemus “Dancehall Giant Tour,” as well as the Rocker-T “If Yu Luv Luv, Show Ya Luv” national US tour featuring Shinehead and Sleepy Wonder. He has remixed tracks for artists such as: Barrington Levy “Work” (MCA), Capleton “Wings of the Morning” (DefJam/RAL), Beenie Man “Tear off Mi Garment” (Island JA); and produced tracks for artists Nicodemus, Shinehead, Ras Michael, Barrington Levy, Rocker-T, Jamalski, Wookie J., Karney, DJ Collage, Poetz4Peace, and SF local hip hop group New Dealers. SOS worked as Reggae Buyer for Rough Trade Records in San Francisco, and as Reggae Editor for American Music Press, a Bay-Area music monthly. From 1994 through 1998, Steffen was the Production Manager for the Paradise Lounge and Transmission Theater in San Francisco and still found time to write and review for independent publications. He has tour managed Mix Master Mike, traveling the globe on both of Mike’s solo tours and with the Beastie Boys. SOS also fronts an alternative rock group Crocodile Tears, plays bass in a Stoner Rock band called Not For Not, and is a member of “biL” – a dancehall, surf, hip hop, who-knows-what else conglomeration of excellence. SOS is the founder of Positive Sound Management. PSManagement represents Rocker-T, Poetz4Peace, Haji Mike, Ian Collins and Karney, exclusively, and consults a number of other established and developing artists. Recent studio works include production for over a dozen artists and bands. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Arne Lucas, Consultant, Illiance Creative Group Formerly the Director of Mobile Marketing at INgrooves, Arne has spent over half his life in the music industry. His first experience was in the early ‘90s as an artist with the San Francisco-based Soul / R&B vocal group IF. During this time he realized he felt more comfortable behind the scenes, and went on to perfect his skills as a recording engineer. By the mid ‘90s he was chief recording engineer for a full service recording studio located in San Francisco’s Mission District and was working as an executive assistant to the President of a local Bay Area label – Classified Records – which was picked up by Tommy Boy in the late ‘90s. At the time, the Bay Area music scene was thriving but Arne felt that there was more to accomplish. By now he excelled at the label, getting his hands into everything from A&R duties, to engineering, physical retail distribution and licensing. He was soon hired on full time and thrived at the label. Arne took to the business of music, expanding his knowledge of publishing, licensing and contract negotiations. He moved on to assist in a new music venture for the New York City start-up A Media, which focused on the Asian American entertainment industry. He was then approached a few years later by his mentor at Classified to take on a Music Supervisor position for 360 Media Group. 360 Media’s flagship product was a DVD series called 360 Video Magazine, a quarterly video magazine that specialized in the import car scene, extreme sports, music and entertainment. Its first mainstream release “Hard Drive” was certified gold and distributed at major retail chains such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Target as well as hundreds of smaller retail stores worldwide. After a number of years and over 20 releases under his belt at 360, the DVD market was on a decline so Arne moved into a new career. In 2003, he accepted a Product Manager position with Hudson Entertainment Inc. who had just acquired the license to The Source Magazine. This was his first experience in the wireless entertainment industry and he hasn’t looked back since. He was integral to bringing what many say was the “Bible of Hip Hop” for over 20 years – The Source Magazine – to mobile. The Source Mobile Channel was one of the only ringtone applications on deck that strictly distributed Hip-Hop/Urban ringtones – this was during the lucrative “polyphonic” era of the ringtone and well before carrier white label mastertone stores such as the ones currently available on Verizon, Sprint, AT&T etc. He eventually moved to a more video game-centric position in mobile as an Account Manager with Namco Networks – working directly with carriers to launch the classic game catalog for mobile from the legendary video game giant. It was here where he learned the intricacies of the carrier world. After close to 2 years peddling mobile video games he decided to get back into the music business at INgrooves where he served as Director of Mobile Marketing for 4 years, overseeing the mobile business for the digital label. Raj Singh, Mobile Consulting / Strategy / Product Planning / Definition Expert Raj Singh is a mobile industry veteran having worked across the space over the past 12 years. Raj is the Founder and CEO of venture-backed Tempo AI focused on developing a day assistant. Tempo AI was spun-out of SRI (Stanford Research Institute) where Raj served as an EIR (Entrepreneur in Residence). Previously, Raj was the founding Vice President of Business Development for Skyfire, a mobile browser that supports full Flash rendering. Prior to Skyfire, Raj co-founded venture-funded Veeker, NBC’s mobile video citizen journalism service and ToneThis, CNET’s top downloaded ringtone creation product. Raj has also worked in product management, engineering, strategy and consulting roles for Kodak Mobile, Dell Mobile, Cellmania, MobiTV, PlayPhone, Tellme, Samsung, Turk Telekom, IGT, Hungama Mobile, Vlingo and Antenna Software. Raj’s personal projects include GameChalk, an SMS multi-player game service, Pubwalk, an LBS bar-hopping service and Wired Mashup of the Year winner in 2006 and YumYum Labs, an Android recipe voice search application and Sprint App 4G Challenge winner. Raj is also a mobile advisor to numerous companies including Movoxx, Nearverse, TinyTube, LocalResponse, Textopoly, Knocking Video and also an investor via ENIAC Ventures. Raj is a regular mobile writer and speaker including formal and guest blogging for GotoMobile, Venturebeat, O’reilly Emerging Telephony and VisionMobile. Raj is a mentor at 500 Startups and Founder Labs and has also made contributions to a number of mobile user and expert groups including the JCP, MMA and the Bluetooth SIG. For more information, please see www.rajansingh.com. Kahlil Najar, Mobile Manager, INgrooves Fontana Currently the Mobile Manager for INgrooves Fontana, Kahlil Najar started his career in music the old fashioned way by working at an independent retail record store. While there he dove head first into the music industry by obtaining an internship at Universal Music, a part time job at KARA in San Jose, working at KMEL as a street team member, volunteering at Classified Records all the while attending Cal State Hayward where he received his degree in Business Management with an emphasis on Marketing Management. After working the front lines of retail, Kahlil landed a job at KOCH Records (now E1 Entertainment) as a Field Marketing Representative which eventually transformed into a physical sales position. He serviced all the major accounts as well as some key independent retailers and was one of only two representatives to service the entire Bay Area. After he saw the decline of the physical market, Kahlil changed career paths and moved into an Artist Relations representative position at music merchandise heavyweights, Cinder Block. Kahlil’s responsibilities included signing bands to new merchandise contracts and placing orders for artists that performed worldwide. He was the account lead for a range of bands like the Silversun Pickups, H20, 30 Seconds To Mars and Death By Stereo. Seeing that music was still adapting to different ways to sell music, Kahlil joined the team over at Tribal Brands, the music agency of choice for Verizon Wireless. 2012-05-30 | In SF – File-Sharing Advances An Artist: BitTorrent & P2P Boost Pretty Lights’ Success
×
You are invited to NARIP’s File-Sharing Advances An Artist: BitTorrent & P2P Boost Pretty Lights’ Success on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at SAE Institute in San Francisco Photo (L-R): Fame House’s Hisham Dahud, BitTorrent’s Matt Mason File sharing has long been the bane of the record and music industries. At this special NARIP program, we flip that notion and take a look at how one file-sharing technology advanced an artist’s career to new heights, more fans and yes… greater music sales. In 2011, electronic musician Pretty Lights and his digital marketing team at Fame House decided to distribute his music (which he already gave away for free) through BitTorrent and its worldwide user base of hundreds of millions of people. The approach was simple: since Pretty Lights is giving away music for free already – and essentially ONLY uses his Web site to do so – why not bring more people in? So Fame House created a special media bundle of three popular Pretty Lights EPs, a new single, and a music video which were distributed exclusively through BitTorrent. Results were off the charts:
“Just because you give away your main product for free does not mean you can’t make money. We live in an attention economy, your biggest chore is getting people to listen, not to pay for your music.” Take An Inside Look Into How It Was Done Come hear how file-sharing technology can legally and effectively increase YOUR bottom line from the executives who created this successful campaign:

2012-04-25 | In SF – Digital Music License Deal Mock Negotiation

Digital Music License Deal Mock Negotiation on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at SAE Institute in San Francisco With major changes in the digital music licensing landscape in recent years, the need for a clear road map when making a deal is needed now more than ever. At this NARIP program, two attorneys explain what you need to know. They will then face off in a live mock negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues that affect a rights holder’s options and income. These experts will give you the inside track on major deal points, what they mean and what leverage you have to negotiate the best possible deal. Also to be discussed: the pros and cons of some of the major digital music services. Most people think they can just hand a negotiation to a lawyer, and leave it at that. But as a professional, you need to be aware of the process and deal points, too, and what the short- and long-term implications to your artists’ careers may be. Most importantly, you will see HOW a digital music license deal is negotiated and be involved in the process. Get educated about the art of deal-making! You need not be a NARIP member to attend. JASON COOCHWYTEWA Jason Coochwytewa is President / Owner of Red Note, Inc. With a diverse background in the advertising and marketing industry of 14+ years, Jason Coochwytewa began his work in entertainment in 2000 as an executive at a large-scale Native American casino in New Mexico. It was here that Jason was introduced to the “business-side” of the music industry: booking, marketing, and creating casino promotions around major national headlining acts. However, his appreciation for music in the art form was discovered as a young boy. Deeply rooted in his Native American culture, his father sang and taught him traditional Hopi songs, emphasizing the importance of listening to the words, rhythm and beat. Time spent with his father laid the foundation to what would eventually become Jason’s passion in life: music. In 2005, Jason launched Red Note, Inc. based in Phoenix, Arizona, and now works full-time planning and managing intimate to large-scale event productions and promotions including festivals and headlining music concerts. Jason has been involved with over 100 shows, working with legendary to “fresh on the scene” musicians and bands. In 2008, Red Note, Inc. produced two major events during Super Bowl XLII; the Arizona Indian Festival with estimated audience of 20,000 and the Native American component of the NFL’s Super Bowl XLII VIP Tailgate Party for 10,000 individuals. Jason serves as a juror on the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards and is an advisory board member for the launch of the World Indigenous Music Awards set to take place in 2010 in Canada. He is a graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing, and is an alumnus of Valley Leadership – Class 26. He currently serves as the National Association of Record Industry Professionals (NARIP) Phoenix Chapter Director, is a Board of Trustee with the Arizona Science Center and a board member with both the Girl Scouts of America Arizona Pine Council and the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of Arizona. Jason once again serves as co-chair of the Arizona Diamondbacks Native American Day on July 12, 2009 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. CINDY GOLDNEY Profile posted shortly.
