How To Use Social Media To Promote Music:
Get A Digital Strategy In Just One Session

on Thursday, April 15, 2010

at Houston Community College in Houston

A digital strategy can mean the difference between “Who are you?” and “Wow, look at how many albums you’ve sold!”

Good news: you’ll find more places than ever to interact with other professionals and reach new audiences.

Bad news: where do you find the time? Between tweets and tags, groups and clouds, friends and feeds, pings and pages, diggs and blogs, you could spend ALL your time on social media and never make a sale.

Once you’ve narrowed it down – which is what this session will help you do – what are the best ways to effectively and efficiently increase your Internet presence on social media platforms?

Get tips, tricks and strategies from three industry leaders to maximize investment of your time and get greater response for your client, music or project.

The Internet is hailed as the great equalizer for those seeking music marketing and distribution opportunities. But mere presence on the Internet does not stimulate demand… or sales. For that, you need a plan.

And that’s what you’ll get with this 2.5-hour in-depth workshop. For the busy music biz entrepreneur, this is a step-by-step blueprint for success.

YOU WILL LEARN

  • Blogging for fun and profit
  • Ways to update ALL your social media at once
  • Secrets to building an online community of fans who support the artist financially
  • Increase Web traffic: 3 things you can do to double your readers in 30 days
  • Get people to comment on your posts.
  • How to write magnetic headlines, killer content and other tricks that generate more traffic to your site
  • How to get ratings and reviews
  • Calls to Action: How to get people to Buy This Now!
  • Twitter & Microblogging
  • Media Sharing: YouTube, Flickr, SideShare
  • Social News & Bookmarking: Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Delicious and niche sites
  • Software and sites that offer you steps to success
Three industry leaders in social media give you the facts you need to take your artist to the top in this special NARIP session.

BONUS
One NARIP member will be selected from our session to win one (1) free half-hour consultation with one of our experts, a $150 value.

Dr. Matthew Wettergreen, Co-Founder, Caroline Collective

The original concept of the engineer, the “ingeniator”, is an artisan who delivers solutions by approaching problems with creativity and ingenuity. Matthew Adams Wettergreen applies this concept in both engineering and art as a researcher, educator, and community strategist. In 2008, Matthew Wettergreen and Ned Dodington founded Caroline Collective, a co-working space in Houston, TX, that fosters community, collaboration, and creativity across artistic and technological disciplines. Caroline Collective’s programming motivates and enhances the creative professional community by exploring sustainable models, such as user-generated conferences, social media networking, and peer-to-peer education. Dr. Wettergreen’s experience as a community strategist includes working in the art and music communities in Houston and Chicago to improve collaboration, communication and share resources. Since 2001 Wettergreen has been a DJ at KTRU 91.7fm, co-hosts a live events show called “The Revelry Report,” and produces national events combining music, art and film. Since 2002 he has mentored individual artists on business and career development and in 2008 expanded this to a community-based educational model called Bandcamp. Having recently completed his PhD in Bioengineering at Rice University with a specialization in Biomechanics and Computer Aided Tissue Engineering, his scientific research experience includes work in computational and experimental biomechanics, cellular solids, rapid prototyping and imaging modalities. His teaching experience covers areas of specialization such as biomechanics, engineering design and Computer Aided Design. In addition to his formal responsibilities, Wettergreen operates in many unofficial roles to the creative and professional community. How To Market & License Music For Film & TV

on Thursday, June 17, 2010

in Houston

With declining record sales, the focus on placing music in film, TV and other media has skyrocketed. Placements are the new coin of the realm, and in this latest of NARIP’s “Art of the Music Deal” series, two experts face off in a live negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues in a music license agreement.

We will also discuss marketing music for film and TV to make it more attractive to buyers, where to find them and how to put yourself in line for the best possible deal.

These experts come together to give you the inside track on major deal points, what they mean and what leverage you have to negotiate the best possible deal.

Most people think they can just hand a negotiation to a lawyer, and leave it at that. But as a professional, you need to be aware of the process and deal points, too, and what the implications to your artists’ careers may be.

Most importantly, you will see HOW a license deal is negotiated and be involved in the process.

Get educated about the art of deal-making!

YOU WILL LEARN:

Major areas of negotiation, including:

Great PR on a Shoestring Budget

on Thursday, October 20, 2011
at Houston Community College in Houston

Public relations is the art of telling a story about the artist or his music or project that interests people enough to either remember it, learn more or buy now! Without the human interest element – the artist’s “story” – conveying a message that people will remember and act on – is almost impossible. In this special program we bring together three experts in the art of “story telling” which is the most important component of a press (and marketing) campaign.

You will learn:

  • How to develop the story: who is the artist? What sets him apart?
  • How to tell the story
  • Who to tell: the artist’s target market
  • Variations of the story for press, radio, TV, touring, fans
Also to be discussed, important public relations tools:

  • The press release: learn what makes it compelling)
  • Photos: great non-cliche pictures dramatically increase chances for coverage
  • Marketing plan; the artist’s road map
  • Fact-Sheet: basic facts all on one page
  • Web site: how to get people there and keep them engaged
  • Mailing list: how to build it
  • Budget: how to do a lot with a little

Mike Kappus began his career in his hometown of Eau Claire, WI. During college he promoted regional bands with friends and became a licensed booking agent in 1970 at age 19. Just over a year later he was invited to join an agency in Milwaukee. In his five years working full time as an agent there, he also bought talent for several local showcase clubs and a few festivals and universities. As a talent buyer and promoter he booked artists as diverse as Asleep At The Wheel, Jimmy Cliff, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee to jazz artists Grover Washington Jr., Weather Report, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and George Benson to the MC5 and Ted Nugent. He also established relationships with future Rosebud clients Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Mose Allison, John Hiatt and John Hammond who signed to Rosebud in 1977 and marked his 4000th booking with Rosebud in 2008.

In 1976, just months after moving to San Francisco to join a booking agency, that company went under so Kappus started the Rosebud Agency with the concept of offering greater service to an intentionally limited number of timeless rather than trendy artists. The agency currently books close to 2000 shows a year worldwide for its 29 artists. Kappus helped launch the careers of Los Lobos, The Robert Cray Band, Ben Harper, John Hiatt, The Neville Brothers and more while helping to raise the profile of veteran artists such as Captain Beefheart, Muddy Waters, The Staple Singers, The Blind Boys of Alabama, John Lee Hooker and others. As a manager, Kappus’s clients have included Hooker, Hammond, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Robert Cray, John Hiatt, Duke Robillard, Loudon Wainwright III, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars and J J Cale, who has been with Rosebud since 1983. As a producer / executive producer Kappus has collaborated on projects with Ry Cooder, Van Morrison, Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt and Eric Clapton to name a few. In addition to booking and management duties, Kappus has made CD deals in the past few years for Mavis Staples, Bettye LaVette and Charlie Watts. In addition to Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, his recent booking signings include Bettye LaVette, Bill Frisell, Allen Toussaint, Ruthie Foster, Trombone Shorty, Carrie Rodriguez and Meshell Ndegeocello. Most recently, Kappus was hired by Van Morrison to oversee promotion and marketing for his April 2008 CD “Keep It Simple.” The record’s entry in the Billboard pop charts at number 10 marked the highest ever US chart position in Van Morrison’s lengthy career.

As head of The Rosebud Agency, Kappus has also incorporated policies focused on environmental and social responsibility issues into the company’s daily routine. The Rosebud office was converted to full solar power in 2000 (the largest such installation in San Francisco at the time) and was named in the first wave of green business certifications in San Francisco. Kappus’s environmental concerns have also driven him to coordinate two compilations for environmental non-profit, Earthjustice, featuring artists from Tom Waits and Willie Nelson to Norah Jones, Bob Dylan, Ruben Blades, Michael Franti and many more. He is vice chair of the board of non profit organization, Music In Schools Today and is an active advisory board member for the US-Cuba Cultural Exchange, along with continuous participation in several other non-profit organizations.

Tom Murphy, Digital Media Technologist

A native “Bay Arean”, Tom grew up surrounded by technology and music. His dad designed Air Force spy satellites (later to become the foundation for Google Maps), and his mom was a classically-trained opera singer and teacher. Beginning with piano lessons in the third grade, he grew to be fascinated with synthesizers and sound recording in high school. This led to a degree in TV production, where he worked in both college radio and the local San Jose ABC-affiliate TV station. Upon graduating from Santa Clara University, he landed his first “real sound job” at Music Annex Recording Studios before taking the digital plunge. He joined Digidesign to support the launch of Pro Tools, represented the company on their CompuServe and AOL forums, and eventually launched their first website. Those “Web 0.1” experiences led to positions at companies like digital-download pioneers Liquid Audio, rich-media mavens Audiobase, and music locker upstarts musicbank. There he learned the many intricacies of encoding, metadata, and rights-management (not to mention the delicacies of “dot-com” startups). After the “dot-com bubble”, he began a 4-year tenure at Gracenote, where he helped customers integrate nearly every product in the deep Gracenote arsenal. From PC applications to embedded devices, to web services and mobile devices, he managed projects for companies like Apple & Real Networks, Nissan & Honda, RIAJ & KDDI. In 2010 Tom worked with a number of media, technology and e-commerce companies to develop The Connected Media Experience – a new technical standard for enhanced digital media packages. When not sitting in front of a computer, Tom spends a lot of time exploring social media, mobile applications, location-based services, and his hometown of San Francisco.

Todd became Goodby, Silverstein & Partners first ever music supervisor + producer a year ago and is very, very busy. He hopes he can help bands make a living by giving them infusions of cash from multinational conglomerates.

BACKGROUND

NARIP members have made placements through these limited enrollment sessions, including most recently Peter Kimmel who placed a song from his catalog (“Soul of a Man Never Dies”) in an episode of True Blood following our session with Gary Calamar earlier this year in Los Angeles. He has also placed a song in Dexter (“Jhaira”) which airs on October 23, 2011 in the US. You can read more about this here.

These sessions should be of particular interest to those who represent catalogs and/or seek intimate pitch opportunities with the best (and busiest) music supervisors in Los Angeles.

Limited to 15 people, NARIP’s sessions enable you to get to know the supervisors and more importantly, enable them to get to know you. At private sessions in Los Angeles, Berlin, San Francisco and New York, participants have been able to pitch for current opportunities on the spot, receive instant feedback as to whether a song was appropriate or not, and WHY. This valuable feedback makes better pitches – and ultimately, placements – possible. In some cases, participants even had time to re-work their music to better fit a supervisors’ needs.

Above all, attendees MET key players in the modern music business, paving the way for future opportunities and giving them an edge in a highly competitive market.

At each session in London, participants will have the opportunity to pitch music for specific opportunities that will be emailed to them in advance of the session. Participants then present music and get immediate, direct feedback from one music supervisor.

What attendees say about NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions held earlier this year in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berlin and New York:

  • “I’ve had 3 managers and 5 years of plugging away on the Internet for contacts and had more success getting material in front of a music supervisor with NARIP’s sessions than anything previously! Please keep it up, I will definitely attend more!” – Shay Dillon, Independent (attended Gary Calamar’s session in LA)

  • “I applaud NARIP in establishing these sessions!” – Richard Khuzami, Dahdoo Productions (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • “Such an amazing night … I have been to many such events in the past where I had the opportunity to meet some major industry leaders but have never felt this kind of intimacy and accessibility and came away feeling like I really made a super connection in the industry… At Jessica’s session I gave her a CD of 30 and 60 second clips of some of my songs. Her assistant emailed me yesterday (before I even followed up!) to say that they can use some of my tracks and needed some metadata (another lesson I learned at NARIP’s session about imprinting metadata onto all tracks!). So I am thrilled to have made such a great contact in the ad biz because of NARIP. So how can I not attend all your amazing sessions knowing I will make such high level contacts that would have been very difficult for me to have made on my own? … I can’t wait for the next session!” – Gail Vareilles, Sandshifter Music (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • “Please keep me informed of the next NARIP sessions in London and LA. Once again, many thanks for the opportunity to pitch [at the Berlin NARIP Supervisor Sessions].” – Reza Davoudi, Nineteen95 Artist Management (attended Andrea von Foerster’s and Gary Calamar’s sessions in Berlin)

  • “Was lots of fun and learned a ton of new things. Both Jessica and Ed were great. I like how all of you are mindful of folks who might not be that familiar with the industry and always provide explanations of definitions that may not be as widely known. Also, the anecdotes (e.g. Serge Gainsbourg’s daughter rejecting AXE) are priceless. Thanks again for coordinating these wonderful sessions. I will highly recommend to others.” – David Liang, Shanghai Restoration Project (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York and John Houlihan session in Los Angeles)

  • Thank you very much for the very interesting pitching session with Andrea at the Popkomm. I would be very keen to take part [in NARIP’s London Supervisor Sessions].” – Christoph Becker, Moanin’ Records (attended Andrea von Foerster’s session in Berlin)

  • “[NARIP’s Music Supervisor series] is a very effective and beneficial program to get contact with the local and national supervisors who run the film and TV industry.” – Robert Case, President, New Pants Publishing (attended Carolyn Richardson, Gary Calamar and Julianne Jordan and sessions in Los Angeles)

  • “Great event with PJ Bloom! Definitely an uncommon opportunity.” – Joel Evans, Cinemasters (attended PJ Bloom session in San Francisco, and Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • “Thank you once again for a fantastic series of supervisor sessions. Looking forward to many more sessions and events with NARIP… Thank you all for your professionalism, earnestness and care in providing the very best for us. We SO appreciate everything you do. [NARIP provides] incredible value.”” – Ben Bidlack, Bees & Honey Music (attended all seven sessions in Los Angeles and PJ Bloom session in San Francisco

  • “It was really great. Will attend the [sessions] in October. Jessica was really lovely and everyone was so talented.” – Sarah Nagourney, Glassbeat Music (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • Very, very informative and helpful. These are fun and the supervisors have been extremely willing to share very useful info. – Catharine Wood, Planetwood Productions (attended Andrea von Foerster, Julianne Jordan and John Houlihan sessions in Los Angeles)

  • “Thank you and the NARIP staff for the supervisor session with Jessica… This was a ‘crash course’ in what an advertising music supervisor needs versus a music cues written for TV shows (which is what I was familiar with)…. I already signed up for the next session on the 27th.” – Classical arranger / composer / producer Sor Harris (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • “I found the session extremely interesting/helpful, and I look forward to attending the rest of the series.” – Jacob Weinrib, Parma Licensing (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • “Last night’s program was awesome, well-organized, inspiring. Chris Mollere was great, with positive yet constructive comments for us all.” – Annie Calder, Coral West Music (attended Chris Mollere’s session in Los Angeles)

  • “I really enjoyed the event and definitely see the value in the intimacy of it. I’m on board for more as well as doing some LA stuff and London.” – Freddy Charles, Freddy Charles Music (attended Jessica Dierauer session in New York)

  • “Thank you again for providing one of the more professional and useful events that I have ever attended. It was intimate, precise and well-executed. The feedback was immediate and valuable.” – Eric Caver, PTEC Dojo (attended Andrea von Foerster session in Los Angeles)

  • “Another successful and extremely well-organized NARIP event, please keep them coming! … [it was] an amazing opportunity to pitch our music to Gary Calamar in such a personal and focused setting.” – Sven Spieker, Mighty Generation Music (attended Gary Calamar, Andrea von Foerster and Chris Mollere sessions in Los Angeles)

  • “What a wonderful job NARIP is doing in putting together these events that help professionals connect and share information. And how cool a person you are. Kudos to NARIP and your wonderful team.” – Daniel Indart, Latin Music Specialists (attended Chris Mollere and Julianne Jordan sessions in Los Angeles)

You are cordially invited to NARIP’s

Music Supervisor Session with PJ Bloom

on Wednesday, August 10, 2011

at SAE Institute of Technology in San Francisco

Representing the best and brightest in music supervision, PJ Bloom (Glee, CSI Miami, Nip / Tuck) selects and places music in blockbuster films and hit television shows, and in NARIP’s intimate session in San Francisco, we import PJ from Los Angeles so you get to meet and pitch him for current opportunities.

NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS ARE A SUCCESS

NARIP member Peter Kimmel attended NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session with guest supervisor Gary Calamar in Los Angeles in May this year, and secured a placement on the hit television show True Blood as a direct result. The song from Kimmel’s catalog (The Soul of a Man Never Dies) airs on July 31, 2011 on True Blood. Read more about this here. Scroll down for feedback to NARIP’s session from other attendees.

BACKGROUND

Limited to 15 people who may pitch, NARIP’s sessions enable you to get to know top music supervisors and more importantly, enable music supervisors like PJ to get to know you. At private sessions in 2010, Alicen Schneider needed a theme song for a game show (Minute To Win It) and Gary Calamar needed a title song for an MTV series. At another session, Carolyn Richardson needed a theme song for a television project. Participants were able to pitch for these opportunities on the spot, receiving instant feedback as to whether a song was appropriate or not, and WHY. This valuable feedback makes better pitches – and ultimately, placements – possible. In some cases, participants even had time to re-work their music to better fit the supervisors’ needs.

Above all, attendees MEET key players like PJ in the modern music business, paving the way for future opportunities and giving them an edge in a highly competitive market.

What attendees say about NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions held earlier this year in Los Angeles:

  • “Thank you again for providing one of the more professional and useful events that I have ever attended. It was intimate, precise and well-executed. The feedback was immediate and valuable.” – Eric Caver, PTEC Dojo (attended Andrea von Foerster session)

  • “Another successful and extremely well-organized NARIP event, please keep them coming! … [it was] an amazing opportunity to pitch our music to Gary Calamar in such a personal and focused setting.” – Sven Spieker, Mighty Generation Music (attended Gary Calamar, Andrea von Foerster and Chris Mollere sessions)

  • Very, very informative and helpful. These are fun and the supervisors have been extremely willing to share very useful info. – Catharine Wood, Planetwood Productions (attended Andrea von Foerster, Julianne Jordan and John Houlihan sessions)

  • “I’ve had 3 managers and 5 years of plugging away on the Internet for contacts and had more success getting material in front of a music supervisor with NARIP’s sessions than anything previously! Please keep it up, I will definitely attend more!” – Shay Dillon, Independent

  • “[NARIP’s Music Supervisor series] is a very effective and beneficial program to get contact with the local and national supervisors who run the film and TV industry.” – Robert Case, President, New Pants Publishing (attended Carolyn Richardson, Gary Calamar and Julianne Jordan and sessions)

  • “Last night’s program was awesome, well-organized, inspiring. Chris Mollere was great, with positive yet constructive comments for us all.” – Annie Calder, Coral West Music

  • “What a wonderful job NARIP is doing in putting together these events that help professionals connect and share information. And how cool a person you are. Kudos to NARIP and your wonderful team.” – Daniel Indart, Latin Music Specialists (attended Chris Mollere and Julianne Jordan sessions)
Feedback from the supervisors to music presented

  • “I could use it over a main title… good for a big use in a movie, it’s so emotional and beautiful,” Julianne Jordan said of Michael Plen’s “Amazing”

  • “Possible end credit” material for True Blood, said Calamar of Shay Dillon’s “Voodoo Queen.”

  • “You’ve got cool stuff… your production is awesome” said Chris Mollere of David Liang’s material
At this special NARIP San Francisco session, participants will have the opportunity to pitch music for specific opportunities and get immediate feedback from PJ Bloom.
